Freshmen Lead; Choctaws Fall at Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team suffered its second consecutive, Gulf South Conference loss as the Choctaws (12-10, 7-8 GSC) fell at Christian Brothers University, 88-66, on Thursday, Feb. 10.

A pair of freshmen led the way on the scoring end as Amelia Bell paced the squad with 15 points. It's the second time this season the O'Fallon, Ill., native led in scoring. Ally Alford added 10 points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. MC shot 30.6 percent from the field, but struggled from behind the arc hitting just 1-of-11. The Navy and Gold connected on 27-for-36 for 75.0 percent from the charity stripe and pulled down 43 rebounds.

After being deadlocked at 16 following the first 10 minutes of action, Christian Brothers held a 34-29 advantage at the intermission as it closed out the second quarter on a 5-0. Emily Jones headlined the scoring spurt as she knocked down one of the Lady Bucs' eight 3-pointers in the game at the 1:45 mark.

The Red and Black grabbed a double-digit lead with 7:06 left to play in the third quarter as Yaya Coleman converted on a jumper in the paint. The lead would swell to as many as 19 in the period, but a Bell layup and pair of Jay Levy free throws pulled the deficit to 15 points at the end of the quarter.

The Choctaws' 4-0 run was met with a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter and the Lady Bucs' advantage fell to just 11 points, 64-53, one minute into the final 10. However, Jones drained another trey to push the lead back to 14 points. The 3-pointer sparked a 9-2 run that saw the deficit climb to 21 points. CBU grabbed its largest lead, 88-62, with less than a minute to play on back-to-back free throws from Leanna Pearson.

CBU had three players notch double-doubles in the contest. Coleman led the way with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Jones finished one point back with 24 and pulled down 10 boards. Jememia Montgomery equaled Jones on the glass and pumped in 12 points. The Red and Black posted a 42.2 clip from the floor, including 36.4 percent from the 3-point line, and connected on 78.8 of its shots from the free-throw line. The Lady Bucs totaled 47 rebounds.

Mississippi College continues its Volunteer State road trip as it visits 10th-ranked Union University on Saturday, Feb. 12. Tip-off in Jackson, Tenn., is set for 2 p.m.
