Women's Hoops Topped at Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Freshman Keller Bigham posted her first, career double-double as the Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped its second straight Gulf South Conference contest with a 53-37 decision at Christian Brothers University on Saturday, Nov. 19

Bigham led the Choctaw with season highs in scoring and rebounds. The Warren, Ark., native posted a team-best 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the setback in the Land of the Delta Blues. She becomes just the second MC player on the roster with a double-double during their time in Clinton as sophomore Amelia Bell recorded three during her debut last season.

Fellow newcomer Gabby Bunch finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine boards to finish second on the team in each category.

MC outrebounded the Bucs with a plus-three advantage (40-37) and connected on 15-of-18 from the free-throw line for 83.3 percent, but managed just 19.2-percent from the field.

The Navy and Gold clung to a 10-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of action, but found itself trailing by four points as it headed into the intermission. Freshman Brett Gardner led the team in scoring after the first period of play with six points, including a 3-pointer to put the team up at the conclusion of the quarter.

Leading 24-20 at the break, the Red and Black expanded its lead during the next 20 minutes as it outscored MC 29-17 during the second half of basketball. CBU held the Navy and Gold to five, made field goals in the second half.

Yaya Coleman paced the Bucs with 15 points and eight rebounds in the contest. Jeremia Montgomery joined Coleman in double figures in the scoring column with 13 points. CBU shot 37.7 percent from the floor, including a 27.8 clip from behind the arc, and was 8-for-15 from the charity stripe (53.3%).

Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 as it hosts Ouachita Baptist University in non-conference play. Tip for the home opener is 5:30 p.m.
