Season Highs Not Enough; Choctaws Drop Contest to Ouachita

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team recorded a season high in points and 3-point percentage, but fell 73-62 to Ouachita Baptist University on Tuesday, Nov. 22. MC fell to 1-4 on the season while the Tigers improved to 2-1.
 
The point total surpassed the previous high of 61 points set in the season opener against LeMoyne-Owen College. MC it 7-of-14 from behind the 3-point line (50.0). The previous mark was 36.4 in the setback to Tuskegee University. It posted a 40.8 clip from the field and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe – both second-best percentages of the season.
 
Kyiah Julian led the Choctaw with a season-high 17 points. It is the fourth time in five games the Greenwood, Ark., native posted double figures. Her previous high against the Tigers was six points on Nov. 23, 2019 during her time at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. She also finished second on the team in rebounds with three.
 
Karly Ivy joined Julian in double figures as she matched her season high with 10 points. She set the mark on Nov. 11 in her debut against LeMoyne-Owen in the season opener.
 
Gabby Bunch paced MC on the glass with four rebounds while Keller Bigham joined Julian for the second-best mark with three boards.
 
The Choctaw trailed 32-29 at the break, but were outscored 26-14 in the third period as OBU opened with a 10-2 run to reach a double-digit lead and never looked back. MC cut the deficit to within seven points, 44-37, but the Tigers quickly extended the margin to 15 points, its largest of the game, with just over 1:30 left in the quarter.
 
Makayla Miller paced the Purple and Gold with 25 points. She also grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Laney Mears and Madeleine Tipton each joined Miller in double figures with 14 points each. OBU finished the game with 60.8 percent from the floor, including a 50.0 clip from behind the arc. It also hit 57.1 percent from the free-throw line.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 26 as it hosts the University of West Florida. Tip for the Gulf South Conference affair is at 5:30 p.m.
