Volleyball Overpowers Blazers in Four Sets

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team posted its second victory of the week as it topped Valdosta State University in four sets on Friday, Oct. 7. MC improves to 16-2 and 6-2 in the Gulf South Conference.

The victory gave the Choctaw their first win in program history over the Red and Black.

For the second time in the last three matches, Caroline Chastang posted a team-best 20 kills as she compiled a .341 attack percentage – her fourth highest total of the season. It marks the sixth time this season the Bay Minette, Ala., native has paced the squad in kills.

Kendall Platt joined the freshman in the double figure kills as she registered 12 in the match. It is her 60th career contest in double-digit kills.

Lexie Laurendine directed the offensive attack as she dished out 41 assists. It is the ninth time in her career with 40-plus dimes and her first this season. The squad totaled 45 assists in the match.

Defensively, Sloane FitzHenry and Julia Sumrall led the charge at the net with three blocks each. Lydia Paulette joined the brick wall brigade with two rejections. Missy Beber led the squad with 14 digs.

The two team stood deadlocked after the first two sets of play. The Navy and Gold opened the match with a 25-20 victory, but the Blazers knotted things up in the second, 25-21, to send the contest to intermission.

MC took a 2-1 advantage as it walked away with a 25-18 win in the third. The Navy and Gold held as much as a 20-11 advantage in the set before VSU chipped away to narrow the deficit to 24-18, but a Platt kill put the set on ice.

In the fourth, the Choctaw posted the first five points of the set – forcing VSU to burn its first timeout. The lead swell to 8-1 with the Red and Black using its final stoppage. MC never looked back in the set as bolstered a .433 hitting clip and spread the love around with Chastang, Platt, FitzHenry and Paulette leading the way with three-plus each.

The Navy and Gold never trailed in the contest in the final two frames.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 as it hosts the University of West Georgia in the final match of the season-long, three-match homestand. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
