CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team secured its 10th sweep of the season as it turned back the University of West Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 8. MC improves to 17-2 on the season and 8-2 in the Gulf South Conference.
Â
The victory gave the Choctaw their first win over the Red and Blue since 2018 and snapped a three-match slide in the series.
Â
Caroline Chastang led the Navy and Gold with 12 kills. It marks her seventh contest as the leader in kills in a match.
Lydia Paulette added eight kills while
Kendall Platt and
Sloane FitzHenry each chimed in seven kills.
Lexie Laurendine directed the offense with 31 assists.
Â
MC totaled eight service aces in the match led by three from Paulette.
Missy Beber and
Londyn Bakeris each chimed in two during the three sets.
Â
Defensively, a trio of Choctaws recorded double figures in digs led by Beber with 14. Platt added 13 in the contest with 12 coming from Bakeris. FitzHenry led the charge at the net with two blocks.
Â
After a convincing win in the opening set, 25-17, the Navy and Gold had to hold off the Wolves in the final two sets with identical scores of 25-23. Trailing 23-21 late in the second, the Red and Blue knotted the contest at 23-all, but a
Julia Sumrall kill followed by a rejection from FitzHenry slammed the door in the second outing.
Â
Much like the second frame, the two squads exchanged leads throughout the contest. MC rallied to post four of the last five points of the set. Chastang notched a kill to tie the set at 22-all and Wolves' miscue placed MC up a point. However, UWG deadlocked the contest at 23-23, but Laurendine added a kill and placed the match on ice with a block on the final play of the match.
