Volleyball Tops West Alabama in Straight Sets

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team returned to the win column on Tuesday, Oct. 4 as it downed the University of West Alabama in straight sets. The win marks the seventh straight for the Choctaw, who improved to 15-2 on the season and 5-2 in league play.

The seven consecutive victories mark the longest win streak in the series and dates back to Sept. 24, 2019. It also gives MC its 14th win all-time against its eastern state neighbors.

A triple threat led by Lydia Paulette paced the Navy and Gold on the night. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native tallied a team-best 10 kills. It is the eighth time this season she has led the team in kills and her 18th career contest in double figures.

Caroline Chastang and Kendall Platt each added nine in the effort.

Lexie Laurendine set up the offensive attack with a team-best 26 assists – her 58th career contest with 20 or more assists and her ninth of the season. The Clinton, Miss., senior also helped guide the defensive effort as she notched 10 digs.

After winning a shaky first set, 25-20, in which the game saw four lead changes and 10 ties, the Navy and Gold responded with a 25-15 victory to hold a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. The squad posted a match-high .462 attack clip in the second set as it totaled 14 kills against two miscues. MC used an 11-4 run during the stretch to secure the set win. Chastang and Paulette lead the charge during the set as the duo combined for seven of the squad's 14 kills.

In the third, the two teams exchanged leads early on, but the Choctaw took control at 9-3 and marched to a match-ending 25-18 victory. The victory gave the Navy and Gold its ninth, straight-set win of the season and its first in conference play.

Mississippi College turns its attention to Friday, Oct. 7 as it hosts Valdosta State University in its Pack It Pink match. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
