JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team fell in four sets at Union University on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Choctaw move to 14-2 on the season and 4-2 in Gulf South Conference action. UU remains unblemished in conference play at 6-0 and 13-4 overall.
Â
Caroline Chastang led the offensive attack for the Navy and Gold as she pounded out a season-high 21 kills. It's the most kills this by a MC player on the campaign. She becomes the first Choctaw with 20-plus kills in a match since teammate
Kendall Platt accomplished the feat in 2018.
Â
Lexie Laurendine dished out a team-best 29 assists. It's the eighth time this season she has notched 20-plus assists and her 57th of the career.
Ali Wiggins added 12 in the contest.
Â
Defensively, Chastang,
Julia Sumrall and
Lydia Paulette defended the net as they collected three rejections each.
Missy Beber defended the backline with a team-best 12 digs.
Â
After it dropped the first two sets, MC responded following the intermission with a victory in the third set. The Navy and Gold trailed 16-10 in the set and faced being swept for just the second time this season, but the squad answered with a 6-0 run to deadlock the match at 16-all. Three service aces from Wiggins and a pair of Chastang kills spearheaded the run. The Bulldogs regained a small lead, but the Navy and Gold went on an 8-3 run to close out the third set, 25-21.
Â
The Choctaw looked to extend the contest to the fifth set and fell just short of its goal as the set contained 11 ties and five lead changes. MC held a 20-18 lead late, but back-to-back miscues allowed UU to tie the contest at 20-all. The Bulldogs faced match point on three different occasions, but the Navy and Gold shook them off each time and gained a set-point decider at 26-25, but the Dogs rattled off the next three points to avenge an earlier loss to MC this season.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 as it hosts the University of West Alabama. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
