Statesmen Defeat Choctaws to Begin the New Year

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Mississippi College Choctaws began the New Year off on the losing end, falling to Delta State by a final score of 72-66 on Sunday evening in GSC play.

The Statesmen controlled the first half of contest, outscoring MC 38-23 in thee first 20 minutes of play. The Choctaws rallied in the second half to outscore Delta State, 43-34, yet came up short with the clock struck zero, falling 72-66.

MC had three scorers with double-digit points and were led by Lamont Berzat with 17 points, four assists, and two steals.

Zach Jones was 5-of-9 from the field with 14 points and a team best eight rebounds (five defensive, three offensive). Galen Smith continued to impress, adding 12 points for the Choctaws. Smith also collected six rebounds in Sunday's loss to Delta State.

Judan Jordan had eight points and Tradavious Thompson had seven points. Thompson finished with three assists and two steals.

As a team, MC was 24-of-53 from the field and 6-of-18 from behind the arc. The Choctaws also tallied 28 points in the paint and got 20 points off the bench. 

MC falls to 4-8 overall on the season and 2-4 in GSC play. They return to the court on Saturday at home versus West Georgia, with tip-off set for 4 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum. 
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and began competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
