Choctaws Complete GSC Series Sweep

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College baseball team completed its Gulf South Conference series sweep on Monday, April 12 as it defeated Christian Brothers University 7-4 in 10 innings. MC improved to 12-15 on the season and 9-13 in the GSC. CBU falls to 3-26 and 2-14 in conference play.

The extra-innings win is the second of the season for the Navy and Gold. MC garnered an 11-9 victory at Union on March 28 to open the series.

A trio of Choctaws recorded a multiple-hit afternoon led by Caleb Reese with a team-best three hits and three RBI, including a pair of extra-base knocks. Dylan Duplechain and George Farid had two hits apiece to join Reese.

David Dunn (1-1) took the win on the mound with two-thirds of an inning of work. He allowed two hits and fanned one Buc in the outing. Dylan Marsh (1) garnered his first save of the season as he struck out two and walked one in in the final inning.

Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, April 16 as it hosts Auburn University at Montgomery in the first game of a three-game, GSC series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

LOCATION: Nadicksbernd Field
RECORDS: Choctaws 12-15, 9-13 GSC | Buccaneers 3-26, 2-24 GSC

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mississippi College jumped out to an early lead in the contest as Jaron Harris got the scoring started in the second with a single up the middle to score Logan McGrew. Farid drove in the second run of the game in the third frame with a double down the left field line to score Duplechain.
- MC held the two-run advantage until the sixth as CBU plated a pair. Ben Brocato scored on a Payne Smith single to left and Like Wewers took home off a Choctaw fielding miscue.
- Reese put the Choctaws back in front in the top of the eighth with a two-run home run to center field.
- The Bucs knotted the contest in the bottom of the ninth as Jamarion White and Will Turner each drove in a run. The Red and Black loaded the bases with two outs, but a Reid Voss strikeout and Brocacto grounding into a fielder's choice ended the potential game-winning threat.
- MC responded with three runs in the top of the 10th. Farid broke the tie with an RBI-single to right center that scored Ken Scott. Reese followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Farid and give MC a 6-4 lead. The final run of the game came as Dakota Kennedy was hit for the third time on the day with the bases loaded to advance Lane Willis across the dish.
- CBU attempted a second, game-winning rally in the bottom half of the inning as runners stood at the corners, but Marsh fanned his second batter of the inning.

ON THE MOUND
- Bryce Lewis had a stellar start for the Navy and Gold. He allowed just one earned run through eight frames and gave up just six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Jackson Smith allowed two runs on three hits in a third of an inning in relief of Lewis.
- Jackson Lyons (1-4) took the loss on the mound for CBU with 2.1 frames in relief. He surrendered three runs – two earned – on one hit along with three walks. Bucs' starter Travis Cole allowed four runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Hayden Edwards toed the rubber in the final two-thirds of an inning and walked one and struck out one.

INSIDE THE BOX
- With the sweep, Mississippi College has won the last eight in the series with Christian Brothers and is 12-4 in Memphis.
- The sweep is the third of the season for the Choctaws and the second in conference play. Both conference sweeps have come on the road and both in the State of Tennessee (Union and CBU). The lone home sweep came in non-conference action against Miles College.
- With the three RBI, Reese has five, multi-RBI contests on the campaign, which is fourth on the team. The three-RBI performance is his third of the season, which is tied for tops on the squad.
- Reese is also tied with Dylan Duplechain for the home run lead. The two Louisianans have seven home runs apiece this season.
- With eight innings on the bump, Lewis rest his career-longest outing. His previous long was seven frames, which he accomplished three times with the last coming against West Georgia on April 3, 2021 – a complete-game, 11-0 shutout.
