Baseball Splits Saturday Twinbill

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team split the doubleheader against Shorter University on Saturday, March 20 at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium. MC run-ruled the Hawks in the night cap 13-3 after falling 5-2 in the first game of the day. The Choctaws moved to 5-13 and 2-11 in the Gulf South Conference. SU moved to 14-7 and 11-7 in the league.
 
Dakota Kennedy paced the Choctaws at the dish he collected a team-best five hits – all coming in the second game of the double dip. Ken Scott and George Farid each notched three hits and drove in a pair. Logan McGrew paced the team in RBI with four – coming in the run-rule victory.
 
Jackson Bridges (3-2) earned the win on the mound for MC. Bridges tossed a complete-game, four-hit effort only allowing two earned runs and fanned four. Payton Russell (2-3) pitched 6.2 in the opener as he allowed four runs – all earned – on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, March 27 as it travels in Jackson, Tenn., for a three-game, GSC series against Union University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. The series finale on Sunday is marked for a 1 p.m. start.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Choctaws struck first in the contest as they scored in their first trip to the plate. Ken Scott connected on a two-out, double and became the first run of the game as he scored on a Farid triple to left field.
- MC held the lead until the top of the fifth when Jakob Woods homered to left field to knot the contest at 1-all. SU broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh as it connected on three solo home runs to grab a 4-1 lead.
- After Nate Butterworth expanded the lead to 5-1 with a RBI-single in the top half of the eighth, the Navy and Gold responded with a run in the home half of the frame as Scott drove in Kennedy.
 
ON THE MOUND
- Jackson Smith tossed the final 2.1 innings in relief for the Choctaws. He allowed just one run on three hits in the appearance.
- Taylor Boisclair (3-2) took the win on the hill for the Hawks. He fanned nine and allowed just two runs on four hits with a pair of walks. Kevin Ludden (5) garnered the save as he struck out two and allowed a hit in the final inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mississippi College held a 2-1 lead through the first two-and-half innings and exploded in the bottom of the third with six runs. McGrew's three-run home run headlined the frame for the Choctaws. Caleb Reese also drove in a pair during the inning and Scott got the scoring started with a RBI-hit.
- Shorter got two runs back in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run from Luis Acevedo. MC got the two runs back in the bottom of the fifth as the Choctaws executed a double steal with Lane Willis scoring and Alex Hay advanced to third. Hay later scored on a Kennedy single.
- The Navy and Gold added two more in the seventh off RBI-hits from Kennedy and Jaron Harris. McGrew capped the scoring in the eighth with a sacrifice fly that plated Reese.
 
ON THE MOUND
- Shorter sent eight hurlers to the mound in the final game of the series. Starter Ryan Parker took the loss on the mound with 2.0 innings of work as he allowed five runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
INSIDE THE BOX
- The 13 runs on Saturday marked the most this season for the Choctaws as it surpassed the 12 scored last weekend against UAH and matched the 12 against Miles College on Feb. 27.
- The 16 hits in the final game tied for the most this season. It equaled the mark set last Saturday against UAH.
