Freshmen Fantastic in Setback

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team had its three-game, win streak snapped as the Choctaws (7-4, 2-2 Gulf South Conference) fell to 19th-ranked Union (Tenn.) University on Saturday, Dec. 18. Union improved to 9-2 and remained unblemished in the conference at 4-0.

Ally Alford posted a season-high 27 points in the setback. That marks the most points by a Choctaw this season. Fellow freshman Amelia Bell collected her first, collegiate double-double with 10 points and a team-best 12 rebounds while Kyiah Julian added 15 points.

MC shot 30.8 percent from the field in the contest, including a season-best 55.0 clip from behind the arc. The Navy and Gold also connected on 92.3 percent from the charity stripe – also a season-high. The squad grabbed 37 rebounds, which matched the total collected from the Lady Bulldogs.

Jaelencia Williams led the way for Union with 20 points and 13 rebounds – 10 of which came from the defensive end. Shanique Lucas posted a team-best 22 points. Ashtyn Baker poured in 12 points with 10 coming from Samariah Thompson.

The Lady 'Dogs shot 54.4 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from the 3-point line. UU was 69.6 percent from the line.

MC trailed its nationally-ranked, GSC member by nine at the break, but saw the third quarter get away from them late as Union outscored them 22-15 during the period, including a 6-0 run over the final two-and-half minutes.

Union swelled its lead to 18 points, its largest of the game, with 8:09 left to play on a layup from Williams. MC pulled within 10 points, 70-60, on a free throw from Bell, but the Bulldogs extended their lead back to as many as 15 points with just over three minutes left.

Mississippi College returns to action on Monday, Dec. 20 as it closes out the pre-holiday slate against Christian Brothers. Tip-off for the GSC contest is set for 2 p.m.
