Women's Hoops Falls to Christian Brothers

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped its second straight Gulf South Conference outing as it fell 71-61 to Christian Brothers University on Monday, Dec. 20. MC moves to 7-5 on the season and 2-3 in the conference. The Lady Bucs improved to 3-8 and 2-3 in the league.
 
The Choctaws were led by Jay Levy with 13 points while NeNe Williams added 11 points. Amelia Bell led the way on the glass with six rebounds. MC shot 36.5 percent from the field, including a clip of 29.4 from behind the arc. It struggled from the charity stripe at 55.6 percent and grabbed 36 rebounds.
 
Yaya Coleman led the way for the Red and Black with 25 points. Emily Jones chimed in 20 points and grabbed a team-best nine boards. CBU connected on 45.3 percent from the floor and hit 43.8 percent from the 3-point line. The Lady Bucs shot 61.5 percent from the free-throw line and pulled down 42 rebounds.
 
MC held a narrow 33-31 lead at the break and led 53-46 through three quarters, but the Lady Bucs took control of the game in the fourth as they outscored the Navy and Gold 25-8 over the final 10 minutes.
 
Kyiah Julian gave the Choctaws their largest lead of the game,43-31, at 6:46 mark of the third period as she converted a CBU turnover into a fast-break layup. Jones knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit under double digits 24 seconds later. MC again pushed the lead back to double figures, but again the Red and Black pulled within single digits and trailed by eight heading into the final quarter.
 
The Lady Bucs tied the contest at 55-all just over midway through the quarter and the two squads exchanged leads until the final two minutes of the contest when the visitors from Memphis. The Red and Black outscored the Choctaws 10-0 down the stretch to gain its first road win of the season.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 2 as it travels to instate and GSC foe, Delta State University. Tip-off in Cleveland, Miss., is set for 2 p.m.
