Milestones Reached as Choctaws Advance to GSC Semifinals

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- For the first time in program history, the Mississippi College volleyball team advanced to the Gulf South Conference Semifinals as the Choctaws swept Shorter University at the University of West Florida Field House.

MC takes on host West Florida on Saturday, Nov. 20 for a chance to play for the tournament championship on Sunday, Nov. 21. First serve against the Argonauts is scheduled for 2 p.m.

During the match, Lexie Laurendine and Kendall Platt each reached career milestones – both firsts for the program. Laurendine accomplished 2,000 career assists while Platt achieved 1,000 career kills.

The Choctaws posed a balanced, offensive attack as five players recorded seven or more kills. Lydia Paulette led the way with 10 kills. Lexi Richards and Stevie Nesbit each added nine followed by Platt with eight and Sloane FitzHenry chimed in seven. Laurendine directed the attack with 36 of the teams' 40 assists during the straight sets.

Defensively, Laurendine along with Missy Beber recorded double figure digs with 12 apiece. Paulette led the charge at the net with a pair of blocks.

MC jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-14 victory. SU battled back in the second set as the two teams exchanged six ties and seven lead changes. Richards tied the set at 16-all, the last deadlock of the set, as it spurred a 9-1 run to close out the set, 25-17.

A see-saw affair through the first 20 points of the third set witnessed the two squad even at 10 points each. MC grabbed a 17-14 advantage before it closed the match on an 8-2 run to clinch the match, including the final seven points. Erin Davis provided a pair of service aces during the final spurt.
