Choctaws Take Down Majors in Home Opener

CLINTON, Miss. -- The Mississippi College Choctaws took care of business at home Wednesday night at A.E. Wood Coliseum winning by a final score of 79-60 over the Millsaps Majors. 

For the first time in nearly a decade, the two teams met on the hard floor, and Mississippi College did not disappoint, winning it's fifth in a row in the series and 43rd overall. 

The two teams maintained a close score throughout the first half with MC holding slight 20-15 lead with 10 minutes left until halftime. Leading 35-31 with alittle over 30-seconds remaining in the half, Millsaps knocked down a jumper to pull with 35-33 as Mississippi College took a two point lead into the lockerroom.

The second half played in favor of MC as the home team jumped out to it's first double-digit lead of the night with a Zach Jones layup to give the Choctaws a 61-50 advantage.

Mississippi College went on to control the remainder of the second half, jumping out to as much as a 22-point lead with under minute left, before ultimately winning by a final score of 79-60 over the Majors.

The Choctaws had four scores in double-digit points with Lamont Berzat, Zach Jones, and Brandon Boston each finishing with 13-points a piece. Tradavis Thompson added 11 points himself on the night, including a team best three steals. 

Berzat had four rebounds, three steals, while going 4-of-5 from the floor. Jones tallied a perfect 5-of-5 shooting on the night and added a team high four blocked shots. Judah Jordan finished the night with a team best five rebounds while having seven points. Marko Jovanovic went 4-of-5 on the night with nine points.

As a team, MC finished 31-of-54 (57.4 percent) shooting, while also going 11-of-12 in the paint with 40 points scored in the paint compared to 14 points for the Majors. The Choctaws also were aided off the bench with a total of 29 bench points scored on the night. 

With the win, MC improved to 1-1 overall. The Choctaws return to the court on Saturday at home versus LSU-Shreveport with tip-off beginning at 1 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
