Three Lady Choctaws Score in Double Figures; Fall in OT at CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Three Lady Choctaws scored in double figures, including a career-high from Rivers Futral and a double-double from NeNe Williams, but it wasn't enough as the Mississippi College women's basketball team fell 77-69 in overtime at Christian Brothers on Friday, Jan. 29. MC moved to 3-5 on the season and inside the Gulf South Conference. CBU improved to 1-4 overall and the league.
 
Futral led the team as she poured in 18 points on the evening. Williams added 11 points along with a career-high 12 rebounds. Kyiah Julian joined the double-digit scoring efforts with 14 points.
 
MC shot 38.8 percent from the floor and was 13-for-19 from the charity stripe on the night. The Navy and Gold grabbed a season-high 44 rebounds.
 
Brynne Lytle led the Lady Bucs with 45 points and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Emily Jones joined her double figures with 11 points.
 
CBU shot 35.2 percent from the field and hit 19-of-25 from the free throw line for 76.0 percent. The Red and Black grabbed 48 rebounds.
 
Mississippi College and Christian Brothers play again on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Canale Arena in Memphis.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A back-and-forth contest through the first 10 minutes of play saw Christian Brothers hold a 20-17 lead heading into the second quarter. CBU expanded on its lead and grabbed a double-digit advantage with just over a minute remaining in the half and took the 34-24 lead in at the break.
-The Red and Black continued to add to its margin and swelled the lead to 41-28 at the 5:40 mark of the third quarter. The lead marked its largest of the game for the Lady Bucs. The Lady Choctaws responded with a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to within four points and trailed by that margin heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation. Five different Lady Choctaws scored during the scoring run.
-Mississippi College worked away at the Lady Bucs' advantage and claimed its first lead since the opening bucket of the contest as Julian hit a jumper at the 3:58 mark to place the Navy and Gold in front 52-51. The two squads exchanged baskets and leads the remainder of the way with CBU gaining as much as a five-point lead with 30 ticks on the clock. MC scored four of the next six points to cut the lead to 64-61 with 14 seconds left in regulation. Futral sent the contest into overtime as drained a 3-pointer with three ticks on the clock to force a 64-all deadlock.
-CBU regained the lead early in the overtime period on the backend of a pair of free throws from Karlee Bates and the Lady Bucs never relinquished the lead. MC picked up its first basket of the OT with 2:34 left on a trey from Julian and Futral added the only other basket with just under two minutes left. The Red and Black outscored MC 13-5 in the extra period.
 
KEY NOTES/STATS
-Futral's scoring night surpassed her previous total of 15 points in the season-opening win against UAH on Dec. 11. This marks just her second game in double figures.
-Williams becomes the third player this season with a double-double for the Lady Choctaws. The 11 boards surpassed her previous high of eight that came last weekend at Union.
-Julian has scored in double figures in four of her last five outings and tonight's total marked the second most points in her MC career.
-The Mississippi College bench has outscored the opposition's reserves seven times this season as the Lady Choctaws held a plus-12 advantage tonight in the setback.
The season-best 44 rebounds passed the previous high of 43 set against UAH in the season opener. It's just the second time this season the Navy and Gold has totaled 40-plus rebounds.
