Hollinghead, Choctaws Upend Golden Bears

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team got all the runs it needed in the fourth inning as the Choctaws upended Miles College on Wednesday, Feb 26 at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium. MC improved to 8-6 on the season while the Golden Bears moved to 7-8 on the year.

Chauncey Callier and Caleb Reese each recorded multiple-hit efforts in the contest while Callier, Sam Kimel and Logan McGrew each drove in a run. MC totaled eight hits on the chilly, rainy day at the yard.

Garrett Hollinghead (1-0) grabbed his first win of the season on the hill. Hollinghead fanned eight in 8.1 innings and allowed the one, Miles run on six hits. 

Mississippi College returns to Gulf South Conference action this weekend as it hosts Union University. The three-game series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 29. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-  Mississippi College and Miles College found themselves in a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for three hits through the first four and a half innings of the contest. Only four baserunners reached during the early stretch of the game. 
- The Choctaws broke the scoreless streak in the bottom of the fifth as they totaled four hits and capitalized on a Miles' error. Callier got the scoring started as he led off the frame with a solo home run to left field. After Ken Scott reached on an error, Kimel tripled down the right field line to plate Scott. Kimel later scored on a McGrew RBI single. McGrew capped the scoring in the frame as he crossed the dish on a wild pitch.
- MC added its final run of the game in the eighth as Callier swiped a pair of bags in the frame and eventually crossed the dish on a fielding miscue.
- Miles added its lone run of the game in the top of the ninth as 
Dylan Nivens scored on a Choctaw error.
 
ON THE MOUND
- Austin Chastang came on in relief and pitched the final two-thirds of the ninth.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
- Hollinghead's eight strikeouts matched his previous high set last season at Harding University.
- Mississippi College garnered its first midweek win since April 9 last season in a 10-7 victory over Henderson State.
- With the victory, the Choctaws improved their series record against Miles to 5-1 and avenaged a 6-5 loss last season to the Golden Bears.
- With the Callier home run in the fourth, MC has recorded a extended its consecutive streak to four games and notched a homer in nine of its 14 games this season.
