Valiant Choctaw Effort Falls Just Short at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team pushed Union University to the limit but ultimately fell 82-76 on Saturday afternoon at Fred Delay Gymnaisum.

The Choctaws fell to 8-17 with a 4-15 Gulf South Conference record, while the Bulldogs improved to 18-9 with a 12-7 league mark.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - Union scored the game's first six points, but the Choctaws bounced back and when Zach Jones hit a three-pointer with 14:17 remaining, the score was tied at 10-10.
  - The Choctaws would go on to take their first lead of the contest with 12:17 to go as Stefan Bozickovic hit a long-range shot to make the score 16-15.
  - The Bulldogs appeared to take control mid-way through the half, extending the lead to 36-25 with 4:54 remaining in the half.
  - The Choctaws answered with an 8-0 run to cut into the deficit and would eventually trail 43-38 at the break.
  - MC scored the first four points of the second half and would cut the score to 43-42 just under a minute into the final 20 minutes.
  - Union pushed the advantage back out to seven, but a 6-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Winceton Edwards made the score 55-54 with 13:18 to go.
  - The Choctaws were unable to get any closer the rest of the way as the Bulldogs were able to hold on for the six-point win.
 

KEY STATS
  - Edwards came off the bench to score 24 points, going 6-of-11 from the three-point line and 8-of-15 from the floor.
  - Bozickovic also came off the bench and poured in a season-high 21 with a 3-of-5 night from long range.
  - Overall, the Choctaws shot 45% (29-of-64) from the field and went 11-of-29 (39%) from the three-point line.
  - Jones also scored in double-figures with 17 while pulling down a team-high six rebounds.
  - The free throw line was a massive difference on the road for the Choctaws, going 7-of-13 from the stripe, while the Bulldogs went 25-of-31.
  - MC was also called for 23 fouls, while Union drew just 13 whistles on the night.
  - The Bulldogs shot 24-of-60 (40%) from the floor and went 9-of-26 (35%) from the three-point line.
  - Five players scored in double-figures for MC, led by LiDonta Hicks-Gentry with 14 points.
 

NEXT UP
  - The Choctaws will wrap up the 2019-20 season next Saturday when they travel to Livingston to face West Alabama at 4:00 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
