Lady Choctaws Complete Season Sweep of VSU

 CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team throttled Valdosta State University on Thursday, Feb. 13 to the tune of 76-55 inside A.E. Wood Coliseum. It's the first time MC completed the season sweep of the Lady Blazers since the 1992-93 campaign. MC improved to 10-12 overall and 7-9 in the Gulf South Conference. VSU fell to 16-7 and 8-7 in the league.
 
Four Lady Choctaws scored in double figures led by Zariah Matthews with 24 points. Coco Hobson added a double-double with 16 points and a roster-best 11 rebounds. Moriah Hurst and Shanell Kitchens each supplied 12 points.
 
MC shot 49 percent from the floor, including a clip of 42.1 from behind the arc, and connected on 72 percent from the charity stripe.
 
VSU was led by Kayla Bonilla with 14 points. The Red and Black shot 35.3 percent from the field, including 27.8 the 3-point line, and hit 73.7 percent from the free throw line.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Valdosta State held a slim six-point edge as the two teams headed into the locker room for the half. The two squads stood knotted at 17-all following the first 10 minutes of play, but the Lady Blazers outscored the Navy and Gold 17-11 in the second stanza.
- MC outscored the Red and Black 21-10 in the third quarter. The 21 points was the second-most this season in the third quarter.
- The Lady Choctaws posted 27 points in the fourth quarter to help the team scored the second-most points in the final stanza this season – one-point shy of its best against Belhaven in the season opener.
- MC held Valdosta scoreless for nearly seven minutes through the end of the third quarter until the 5:54 mark of the fourth quarter. The Lady Choctaws went a 23-0 run during the span.
The Lady Choctaws grabbed their largest lead of the game, 21, with 4:50 left to play in the game.
 
KEY STATS

- Matthews' 20-plus point effort marked the sixth of her career. It's the most by any Lady Choctaw since returning to Division II.
- Hobson's double-double marked the fifth this season and ninth of her career.
- The last time MC beat VSU twice in the same season was during the 1994-95 campaign.

- The Lady Choctaws return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 as it hosts the University of West Florida. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
