Lady Choctaws Cruise to Win over West Florida

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team extended its season-long win streak as the Lady Choctaws (11-12, 8-9 Gulf South Conference) led post to post in their 86-59 victory over the University of West Florida. The Argonauts fell to 7-19 and 3-15 in the league.
 
Four Lady Choctaws scored in double figures led by Mikeba Jones with a career-high 20 points. Moriah Hurst added 18 points with 14 coming from Coco Hobson. Zariah Matthews concluded the quartet with 10 points. Jones and Hobson each grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
 
MC shot 51.1 percent from the field, including a clip of 31.3 from the behind the arc, and was 11-for-13 from the free throw line for 84.6 percent.
 
UWF was led by Danielle Norquest, who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Blue and Green shot 38.2 percent from the field and was 6-of-23 from the 3-point line. Argos shot 68.8 percent from the stripe.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lady Choctaws opened the contest on an 11-0 run as it cruised to a 16-point lead after the first 10 minutes. Jones and Hurst provided the spark during the early push as Jones scored seven of the first 11 points as Hurst added four points during the stretch.
- MC grabbed a 20-point lead with just under two minutes to play before the half on a 3-pointer from Jones and took a 47-30 lead in at the break.
- After growing its lead to as many as 31 in the third quarter, MC grabbed its largest lead of the game, 80-43, with 7:26 left to play in the contest on a jumper from Jeyla Smith.  
 
KEY STATS
- The win averaged an earlier loss to UWF on their home floor and ended a three-game losing streak in the series. It's the first MC win over UWF since Feb. 14, 2018 in Clinton.
- The 86 points marked the third most in a game this season for the Navy and Gold and the most in GSC play besting the 79 points scored at West Georgia on Jan. 2.
- The 20-point effort marks the first of the season for Jones. She becomes the 10th Lady Choctaw to post a 20-plus scoring effort since the program returned to Division II and the fourth MC player this season.
- The victory moved MC into eighth in the GSC standings with three games to play. The top eight teams advance to the GSC Tournament.

- Mississippi College hosts in-state and conference foe Delta State on Thursday, Feb. 20. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
