Flames Pull Away in Second Half for 68-54 Win Over Choctaws

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team could not sustain a late first-half run as they fell to GSC-leading Lee University on Thursday night, 68-54, in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Choctaws fell to 7-12 on the year with a 3-10 Gulf South Conference record, while the Flames improved to 16-4 with an 11-2 league mark.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - The Flames got off to a quick start and when Quay Kennedy converted a Kentrell Evans assist into a dunk with 9:43 to go, they took their largest lead of the 20 minutes at 23-10.
  - MC would storm back, however, holding the Flames scoreless for nearly eight minutes and going on a 14-0 run to grab the 24-23 lead.
  - Winceton Edwards nailed a three-pointer with 2:11 remaining to cap the run and give the Choctaws the one-point lead.
  - The Flames answered with a 6-2 run to close the half and took a 29-26 advantage into the break.
  - Lee then scored the first seven points of the second half and extended the lead back to double-figures at 36-26 with 16:59 remaining.
  - The Choctaws cut the lead back to 36-28 on the next possession, but the Flames would continue to open up the advantage and eventually grab as large as an 18-point lead at 59-41 with 4:24 to go.
 

KEY STATS
  - The Choctaws went 18-of-52 (35%) from the field and just 5-of-17 (29%) from the three-point line.
  - The Flames stormed out in the second half from the floor, shooting 14-of-25 (56%) and hitting 7-of-13 (54%) from the three-point line.
  - Winford Ross and Jacob Taylor each had a team-high 13 points for the Choctaws, while Taylor led the way with seven rebounds and three steals.
  - Michael Williams Jr. had a season-high five assists as the Choctaws had helpers on 13-of-18 made field goals.
  - Kennedy scored a game-high 20 points, while Ryan Montgomery tallied a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
 

NEXT UP
  - The Choctaws will be back in action on Saturday when they host UAH at 4:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
