Choctaws Take Defending GSC Champion, West Florida, to Brink

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College volleyball took the defending Gulf South Conference champion, West Florida, to five sets on Friday, Sept. 27, but came up a bit short as the Choctaws fall to 3-9 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. West Florida improved to 9-5 on the year and 2-0 in the GSC.
 
It marked the fifth time this season the Choctaws have gone to five sets.
 
Jamie Boros and Kendall Platt led the Navy and Gold with double figure kills each. Boros paced the squad with 18 on the night while Platt turned in 11 kills. Lexie Laurendine recorded a team-best 23 assists while Ingrid Savola chimed in 12.
 
Defensively, Julia Martin turned in 25 digs to lead a trio of Choctaws. Platt added 16 with 11 coming from Laurendine. Autumn Frost led the way at the net with three total blocks.

TURNING POINT
After Mississippi College battled back to send the match into the deciding set, West Florida grabbed an 8-6 lead in the fifth. MC used an Argos' miscue to clip the lead to within a point, but West Florida responded with a 6-1 run to capture a 14-8 advantage en route to the 19-5 match-clinching win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After West Florida opened the contest with a 25-16 in the opening set, the Choctaws battled back to even the match at a set each. MC trailed 14-8 in the second set and closed the gap and tied the contest at 20-all. MC took its first lead, since 2-0, at 22-20 on a Laurendine kill off an assist from Savola.
  • UWF jumped out early in the third set and held a 24-16 advantage, but the Choctaws held off set-point for four consecutive points before succumbing to a 25-20 setback.
  • MC trailed as much as 12-6 in the fourth set, but responded and tied the contest at 21-all on a kill from Boros off an assist from Laurendine. The point was part of a 6-1 run by the Navy and Gold to close out the set and send the contest to the fifth. The duo connected four times during the run for MC points.   
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Platt posted her ninth contest this season in double figure kills and fourth straight. It marks the 28th of her career.
  • Boros' double figure kill performance is her team-best 12th of the season and 27th of her career.
  • Platt and Laurendine notched double-doubles in the effort. It marked the career 12th for Platt and the 11th from Laurendine.
  • Frost moved to seventh in career block assists with 120 and eighth in total blocks with 151.
  • Martin sits fifth in career digs with 775.
  • Lexi Richards posted a season-high with nine kills on the night. Richards surpassed her previous high of two against Texas A&M-Commerce on Sept. 7.
  • The 25-23 win in the second set is the first set win in program history against West Florida.
  • The victory was the 92nd home, conference win for West Florida.
NEXT UP
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 as it travels to Montgomery, Ala., to face Auburn University at Montgomery. First serve at 1 p.m.
