CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team opened its home slate in dramatic fashion with a five-set win over Loyola (La.) University on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Four Choctaws posted double-digit kills, including sophomore Lexie Laurendine, who notched her fifth, career, triple-double. Laurendine finished the night with 13 kills, 24 assists and 15 digs. Fellow sophomore Jamie Boros led the squad with a career-high 19 kills.
Junior Hannah Rue and sophomore Kendall Platt each finished with 11 kills to join the party. Redshirt freshman Ingrid Savola joined Laurendine with 20-plus assists as she dished out a season-high 20.
Defensively, senior Julia Martin recorded 40 digs in the match while junior Brandi Bundy joined her double figures with 12. Junior Autumn Frost led the charge at the net with three blocks, including two solos.
After the two teams exchanged wins through the first four sets, the Choctaws jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the deciding set, forcing Loyola to spend its first timeout. A pair of kills from Laurendine along with a Wolfpack, attack error helped extend the lead to 10-4 and force the LU bench to burn its second and final timeout of the set.
MC closed the set on a 5-2 run as Platt sealed the match with a service ace, one of two during the final stretch for the Choctaws, and ninth of the night.
Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 13 as it travels to Huntsville, Ala., for the Charger Invitational on the campus of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. MC opens the weekend slate at 9 a.m. in the second meeting of the season with Ouachita Baptist University.
