CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College Men's Tennis team is set to appear in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Tennis Championship this Thursday May 2 against the University of West Florida at 1:30 P.M. in Montgomery, Ala at Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center.
The Choctaws will enter the tournament as the #7 seed and will be matched up with the #2 seed West Florida Argonauts. MC will bring in an overall record 5-13 and a 3-7 record in GSC play. Their three conference victories this season came against Shorter, UAH and Christian Brothers. This is the first GSC Tournament appearance for the Men's Tennis program since 2017 when they advanced to the second round, but were eliminated by West Florida.
The #2 seeded Argonauts will be bringing in an overall record of 18-5 and a GSC record of 9-1. The lone match the Argos lost this year in GSC play was to the tournament #1 seed Valdosta State. UWF is currently ranked #8 in the nation and are ranked #3 in the current NCAA South Regional rankings poll. When these teams met in the regular season, it was UWF getting the victory by a final score of 4-0.
The rest of the first round match-ups will feature the winner of the MC vs. UWF match facing the winner of the #3 seed West Alabama and the #6 seed Delta State in the second round. On the other side of the bracket the #1 seed Valdosta State will face the #8 seed UAH in the first round and the winner of that match will face the winner of the #4 seed Lee and the #5 seed Montevallo in the second round.
Second round matches will take place at 1:30 P.M. on Friday May 3 and the winner of those matches will advance to the GSC Championship match on Saturday May 4 at 11:00 A.M.
The tournament will take place at the Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. Eight teams will make the trip to Montgomery and the tournament will have a single elimination format.
