No. 13 Choctaws Split Saturday Twinbill; Rubber Match with DSU on Sunday

CLINTON, Miss. --- The 13th-ranked Mississippi College baseball team split a Saturday twinbill with 23rd-ranked Delta State University at Frierson Field. The Choctaws walked-off with a 10-8 win the series opener before falling to the Statesmen 9-3 in the night cap.
 
Four Choctaws hits .300 or better on the day led by Blaine Crim, who went 4-for-5, including a pair of doubles, and three runs scored. Hunter Sykes and Brandon Broussard each posted .500 clips at the dish while Dylan Duplechain hit. 300, including the game-winning, walk-off home run in the opening game.
 
Dustan Dille (3-1) notched the win on the mound for the Choctaws with one run allowed on two hits in 4.2 innings of work. Dille fanned five in the relief appearance. Zack Ingram (6-3) was saddled with the loss in the second game allowing five runs – two earned – on 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mississippi College jumped on the board early in the opener with three runs in the second inning, but found itself trailing 7-5 after four and half innings after a Matt Majeur three-run home run.
  • The Choctaws rallied and cut the deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth after Sykes scored on a DSU throwing error.
  • After the Statesmen extended their lead with a run in the top of the eighth, MC tied the contest at 8-all in the bottom of the frame as Broussard doubled down the left field line to score Chauncey Callier and Crim.
  • Dille and the Choctaw defense retired the Statesmen in order setting up the come-from-behind dramatics in the bottom of the frame.
  • Sykes led off the ninth with a double to the left center field gap and Duplechain notched the win with his fifth, career home run.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Started Chris Crosby tossed 4.1 frames and allowed seven runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State jumped out to an early lead in game two with six runs through its first four innings.
  • MC cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth as Broussard, Grant Barber and Billy Cameron each drove in runs during the stretch.
  • The Statesmen responded with three runs in the sixth to extend their lead and capture the contest.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Christian Bellew tossed 1.1 innings with a run allowed on one hit with two strikeouts.
  • Brandon Kennedy pitched two frames with three runs allowed on two hits with two strikeouts.
  • Tim Holloway tossed the final frame with one hit allowed and one strikeout.
 
NOTEABLES
Duplechain's home run was his first since Feb. 15 against Quincy University. The home run was also his second against the Statesmen in his career.
Duplechain's home run marked the first runs of the season given up by DSU reliever Tyler Walton.
Mississippi College can clinch the Gulf South Conference regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament with a win in the series finale.
