No. 17 Choctaws Sweep Twinbill at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The 17th-ranked Mississippi College baseball team secured a doubleheader sweep at the University of West Alabama on Saturday, April 20. The Choctaws opened the twinbill with a 13-7 victory and followed with an 8-2 win in the nightcap.
 
Blaine Crim led the Choctaws at the plate with a 5-for-9 day at the plate with nine RBI. Brandon Broussard posted multiple hits in both outings as he added a 4-for-9 afternoon with four RBI. Five multiple hit performances were turned during the two games.
 
Chris Crosby (7-2) notched his seventh win of the season in the opener while Zack Ingram (6-2) grabbed his sixth in the nightcap. Garrett Hollinghead (1) secured his first save of the season in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Leading 5-2 through five innings, the Choctaws busted the game open in the sixth with its third, five-run inning of the season in the sixth. Luke Yancey started the scoring with a RBI single that plated Brandon Broussard. Crim followed with the first grand slam of the season and the first of his career to extend lead to 10-2.
  • The Tigers got a run in the bottom of the sixth and added a two-run home run in the seventh to cut the lead in half.
  • Crim extended the lead in the eighth with a two-run double that scored Dylan Duplechain and Hunter Sykes. Brandon Broussard added a solo home run in the top of the ninth to cap the Choctaws scoring.
  • UWA cut into the lead in the bottom of the ninth with two runs.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Crosby allowed three runs on eight hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 frames.
  • Hollinghead surrendered four runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight game, the Choctaws scored in the first inning as Crim hit a two-run home run – his second of the day.
  • West Alabama cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third on a solo home run from Ben Dalke. Justin Booker tied the contest at 2-all with a RBI double in the fourth.
  • Choctaws regained the lead in the fifth with a five spot headlined by Broussard's three-run home run off Cole Waites. Billy Cameron opened the scoring with a RBI bunt single and Luke Yancey capped the scoring with a RBI double to right.
  • MC added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Chauncey Callier.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Ingram allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
  • Lane fanned four and walked two along with a hit in two innings.
 
NOTEABLES
  • Mississippi College tied a season-high with 15 hits in the series opener.
  • The win at Tartt Field is the first since Feb. 26, 1995.
  • MC has won the first game of the series eight times this season.
  • Crosby moved to a tie for seventh in career strikeouts with 160. He joins Wayman Grantham (1989-92).
  • Crim tied a career-high with seven RBI in the first game of the series. The Mobile, Ala., junior moved to seventh in single season RBI with 54.
  • Crim's double in the eighth pulled him with two of becoming the single season doubles leader and tied him with Bob Boyte for fourth.
  • Mississippi College turned a triple play in the bottom of the fifth (Cameron-to-Barber-to-Crim). It's just one of six triple plays turned in Division II this season and of 16 in NCAA All Divisions.
