No. 18 Choctaws Split Twinbill with Lindenwood

CLINTON, Miss. --- The No. 18 Mississippi College baseball team split a Saturday twinbill in the home opener with Lindenwood University. The Choctaws rallied to take the first game 3-2 in 10 innings, but fell 3-1 in the night cap.
 
Brandon Broussard led MC at the dish going 4-for-5 on the day with a double and RBI. Billy Cameron and Hunter Sykes each collected three hits in the double feature.
 
Christian Bellew (1-0) picked up the win on the mound in the first game for MC while Ryan Lane (1-1) was saddled with the loss on the rubber in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LWU scored the first two runs of the game in the fifth inning. Neil Fischer scored on a fielder's choice to mark the first Lions' run and DJ Miller followed with a single to center field and plated Mitchell Krebs.
  • After Cameron scored in the sixth on a Lindenwood error, Broussard knotted the game at 2-2 with a single up the middle to score Payton Yawn and send the game to extra innings.
  • The Choctaws loaded the bases in the 10th with one out. Dylan Duplechain reached on an error followed by a Broussard single up the middle. After Trace Hamby was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sykes became the fifth MC batter to get hit by a pitch and pushed Duplechain across the dish for the winning run.
ON THE MOUND
  • Bellew tossed a one-hit, three-inning, relief effort on the bump for the win. The Gulfport, Miss., native fanned a pair in the effort.
  • Chris Crosby struck out five and gave up six hits in seven innings in the start.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lindenwood held a 1-0 lead through four and half innings until the Choctaws plated their first run of the game in bottom of the fifth. Cameron singled to right field to score Sykes, but the inning was cut short as Blaine Crim was erased at third base on a throw from right field.
  • The Lions regained the lead in the top of the seventh Ryan Sosnowski connected on a RBI single up the middle to score Bryce Beckmann. LWU added an insurance run as Krebs singled to right center to push Ryan Venne across the plate.
ON THE MOUND
  • Lane struck out six, but allowed three runs on five hits in the complete-game performance.
NOTEABLES
  • Bellew's win on the mound was the second of his career.
  • The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Choctaws.
  • Lindenwood leads the series 5-3 with the split.

NEXT UP
Mississippi College and Lindenwood close out the four-game slate on Sunday, Feb. 10 with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium.
