Lady Choctaws' Comeback Falls Short to AUM

CLINTON, Miss. --- A furious comeback attempt fell short, as the Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped a 59-57 loss to Auburn University at Montgomery on Thursday, Feb. 7 inside A.E. Wood Coliseum. MC hit four, 3-pointers over the final minute to close the gap, but couldn't overtake the Warhawks.

Moriah Hurst tied a career-high with a team-best 13 points. Zariah Matthews supplied 11 points as Coco Hobson added 10 and captured her third double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. The Lady Choctaws shot 34.3 percent from the floor, including a clip of 36.4 from behind the arc. MC hit just 62.5 percent from the free throw line.
 
Jordan Brewster led AUM with 18 points. Makaylla Bullard added 13 points with 12 coming from Kendra Boone. A pair Warhawks grabbed double-digit rebounds with Aaliyah pulling down a team-best 14 boards. Victoria Morales pulled down 10.
 
TURNING POINT
  • AUM used a 16-2 run during the fourth quarter to claim the two point victory. The run stretched over a seven-plus minutes. Four different Warhawks scored during the run. MC's last bucket prior to the run came at 9:43 left in the contest on a jumper by Hobson. Matthews' jumper with 7:02 in the game marked the only basket for MC during the run.

  • The career-high for Hurst tied her mark last set against West Florida on Feb. 14, 2018.
  • Mississippi College turned it over a season-low 11 times in the contest, including just five in the first half – also a season-low.
  • It's the eighth time this season three Lady Choctaws have scored in double figures.
