Choctaws Drop a Pair at South Region Crossover

HOOVER, Ala. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the Gulf South Conference-Sunshine State Conference Crossover on Friday, Oct. 18. The Choctaws (7-15) fell in four sets to Nova Southeastern to open the day and fell in straight sets to Barry University to close out the night.
 
Sophomore Jamie Boros led MC with 20 kills for the two matches while freshman Lexi Richards added 10 on the day. Lexie Laurendine dished out 26 assists followed by Levi Lennard with 18.
 
Defensively, Brandi Bundy led the team with 21 digs for the two matches while Laurendine and Lennard had 13 and 12 respectively. Richards totaled six blocks over the span of the day while Sloane FitzHenry and Kate Bass each added four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After NSU claimed the first set of the match, the Choctaws evened the contest at a set each with a 25-23 victory. MC opened the set with a 5-0 run, including three kills from Platt and an ace from Laurendine. The Navy and Gold held as much as 21-14 lead in the set – which forced Nova into its second timeout. The Sharks cut into the lead and pulled within 23-19 – sending the Choctaws into their second timeout. MC reached set point on an error, but the Sharks fought off the final point with four straight of their own. MC closed the set on Platt kill.
  • A back and forth contest early in the third set saw a deadlock at seven points each, however, the Sharks broke the tie with a 5-1 run to grab a 12-8 lead. NSU never trailed the remainder of the set en route to a 25-15 victory.
  • MC trailed 19-17 in the fourth set, but Nova closed the set on a 6-2 run to clinch the match with a 25-19 win in the set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MC and BU stood tied at 11-all in the first set before the Bucs went on a 6-2 run. MC cut the deficit to 20-17, but the Red and Black closed the set on a 5-0 run en route to a 25-17 win.
  • The two teams battled to a 10-all tie in the second set, but an 8-2 run by Barry placed it up 18-12. MC closed to within 21-17, but the Bucs closed out the set scoring four of the final five points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Navy and Gold jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the third set, however, the Bucs chipped away at the deficit and drew even at 13-13. The two teams exchanged leads and four ties down the stretch – the last coming at 20-all – before BU wrapped the contest up with the final six points.
 
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • With 12 kills against NSU, Boros logged her 15th contest this season with double-digit kills.
  • Laurendine registered a career-high four service aces in the match against NSU.
  • Bass moved into a tie for fourth in single-season solo blocks with 35 in her debut season.
