Men's Basketball Preview: West Georgia

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will return to the court after a 19-day hiatus when they travel to Carrollton, Ga. to face West Georgia on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at The Coliseum is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CT).

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

The Choctaws are led by 15th-year head coach Don Lofton, who has posted a career record of 217-160 (.576). He is joined on the bench by first-year assistant coach Alex Ainsworth and former Choctaw Otis Harvey as a graduate assistant. The Choctaws closed out the 2018 portion of their schedule with an 82-57 home loss to Christian Brothers.

Junior Brandon Boston (15.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg) is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, also ranking 2nd on the team with 12 steals. Senior Marcus Lytle (13.8 ppg) and junior Tre Jenkins (11.2 ppg) are also averaging in double-figures for the Choctaws.

Junior Trai James (4.0 ppg) scored a season-high 10 points with a season-high seven rebounds and seven assists against Christian Brothers. Sophomore Dyllan Taylor (9.7 ppg) leads the team with 4.3 assists per game.
 

SCOUTING WEST GEORGIA

The Wolves are led by first-year head coach Dave Moore, who comes to Carrollton after spending 10 years as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure in Allegany, N.Y. UWG has won 6-of-7, including an 86-55 home win over Oakwood on January 2nd.

Marquill Smith (26.8 ppg) leads the conference and ranks 4th in all of Division II in scoring. He has scored at least 21 points and led the team in scoring in each of their 12 games. Smith also leads the team with 8.5 rebounds per game.

Gerald Blount (10.2 ppg) is also scoring in double-figures, while Aron Ulmer (5.5 ppg) leads the squad with 5.3 assists per contest.
 

GAME NOTES

This will be the 28th all-time meeting between the two schools with MC holding a 17-10 edge in the series.

Over the past two seasons, there have been a pair of season sweeps with MC winning both contests in 2016-17 and UWG getting a couple victories in 2017-18.

The Choctaws are 8-6 all-time in Carrollton, including a 106-101 win in February of 2017.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
