Choctaws Fall to Chargers, 87-68

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team shot over 50% for the fifth time this season, but it was not enough in an 87-68 loss to Alabama Huntsville on Saturday afternoon in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Choctaws fell to 4-12 with a 1-10 Gulf South Conference mark, while the Chargers improved to 14-5 with a 7-4 league mark.

TURNING POINT

The Chargers used an 8-0 run and a pair of 5-0 runs in the opening minutes to jump out to a 20-8 advantage with 13:21 remaining. They would not lead by less than seven the rest of the way.

KEY STATS

The Choctaws shot 50.8% (30-of-59) from the floor, which was their third-best shooting performance of the season, but the Chargers went 33-of-49 (67.3%) from the field.

MC went just 5-of-16 from long range, while UAH was 9-of-18.

The Chargers outrebounded the Choctaws 30-18, including 26 defensive rebounds to just 13 for the Choctaws.

Sophomore Dyllan Taylor scored a team-high 16 points, going 7-of-13 from the field with a career-high eight rebounds.

Junior Brandon Boston poured in 12 points, while senior Marcus Lytle was also in double-figures with 10.

JJ Kaplan led UAH with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Malik Cook-Stroupe had 15 points off the bench.

Seth Swalve and Sam Orf also had 12 points for the Chargers, while Orf had a game-high seven assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After UAH scored the game's opening points, Dyllan Taylor made a layup to make the score 2-2 with 19:03 remaining.

The Chargers scored the next eight points of the contest and would eventually push the lead out to 20-8 in the first eight minutes.

They would extend the advantage out to as many as 17 in the first half and would take a 46-30 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Choctaws showed some fight by scoring the first six points and cutting the lead to 46-36 after a fast-break layup from Taylor.

The Chargers would not let them get any closer, however, as they pulled away for the road victory.

The Choctaws will play these same Chargers on Thursday night in Huntsville, Ala. with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Spragins Hall.
