Men's Basketball Preview: Christian Brothers, Union (TN)

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will head to the Volunteer State and open up a two-game road trip in Memphis on Thursday night against Christian Brothers. Tip-off in Canale Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

They will then head to Jackson, Tenn. on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. game against Union University in Fred Delay Gymnasium.

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

The Choctaws are led by 15th-year head coach Don Lofton, who has posted a career record of 217-164 (.570). He is joined on the bench by first-year assistant coach Alex Ainsworth and former Choctaw Otis Harvey as a graduate assistant. The Choctaws outscored Christian Brothers 49-39 in the second half, but the Bucs walked away with the 81-77 victory on Thursday in Memphis.

Freshman Jacob Taylor scored a career-high 14 points in his first career start against the Bucs. Five different Choctaws scored in double-figures, led by 18 from senior Marcus Lytle (14.5 ppg). Junior Brandon Boston (15.5 ppg) tallied his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Tre Jenkins (10.3 ppg) poured in 12 points against CBU, going 4-of-8 from the three-point line, while sophomore Dyllan Taylor (9.7 ppg) scored 11 and leads the team with 55 assists.
 

SCOUTING CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

The Bucs are led by 20th-year head coach and former Choctaw Mike Nienaber. They snapped a short two-game losing streak with a pair of road conference wins over West Alabama and Montevallo.

Joe Laravie (18.4 ppg) is the reigning GSC Player of the Week after averaging 33.0 points per game in the two road victories. He tallied a double-double with 34 points and 12 rebounds in the triple ovetime win at West Alabama. Adam Dieball (16.1 ppg) leads the team in rebounding (8.3) and assists (6.6) this season.
 

SCOUTING UNION (TN)

The Bulldogs are led by 10th-year head coach David Niven and are coming off a tight 71-65 home loss to Delta State on Thursday night. At the mid-point of the season, Union currenlty holds onto the final GSC Tournament spot as the #8 seed.

Tyree Boykin (23.5 ppg) is the team's leading scorer this season but has not played since November 24th against Southern Arkansas. Terrandus Smith (15.3 ppg) led the Bulldogs with 26 points against DSU, while Tylandrius Parks (9.3 ppg) leads the squad with 7.1 rebounds per game this season.
 

GAME NOTES

This will be the 15th all-time meeting between MC and CBU with the Bucs holding a 9-5 edge in the series.

The Bucs are the only school in the Gulf South Conference that the Choctaws have yet to defeat since returning to Division II prior to the 2014-15 season.

The Bucs grabbed an 82-57 win over MC in Clinton back on December 17th.

This will be the 13th all-time meeting between MC and Union with the Bulldogs holding a 7-5 edge in the series.

The Choctaws snapped a four-game losing streak in their last meeting, grabbing a 69-65 win in Clinton on November 30th, 2017.

MC is 0-4 all-time against the Bulldogs in Jackson, losing their last two contests in Tennessee by a score of 89-81.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
