Four Lady Choctaws Score in Double Figures; Fall to West Florida

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team fell 87-70 on Saturday, Jan. 12 to the University of West Florida at A.E. Wood Coliseum. Four Lady Choctaws scored in double figures in the loss. UWF had a quartet of double figure scorers and two Argos grabbed double-digit rebounds.

Zariah Matthews led MC with 19 points followed by 13 from Coco Hobson and Jamilah Sanders. Moriah Hurst added 10 points. Hobson led the team with six rebounds in the game. MC shot 40.6 percent from the field and connected on 80 percent from the charity stripe.
 
West Florida's Anna Hall recorded her third triple-double of the season with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists. Toni Brewer registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Halee Nieman led the Argos with 24 points while Belle Bistrow added 21 points. West Florida shot 557.6 percent from the floor, including 31.8 percent from behind the arc. UWF shot 70.6 percent from the free throw line.  
 
TURNING POINT
West Florida went on a 15-0 run over a four-minute span in the third quarter to take control of the contest. The run came after Zan Ratcliffe nailed a jumper with 7:38 left in the period to cut the West Florida lead to two points.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Matthews' scoring total tied a career-high set against LeMoyne-Owen on Nov. 8, 2017.
  • Hurst's point total was one shy of equaling a season-high set at West Georgia on Jan. 5 earlier this season.
  • West Florida held a plus-19 advantage on the glass in the contest. The 44 boards for UWF is the second most by an opponent this season while the 25 grabbed by MC marked the fewest this season.

Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 17 as it travels to Memphis, Tenn., to face Christian Brothers University. MC claimed a 63-50 win over the Lady Bucs on Dec. 17, 2018, earning its third victory in the series. CBU holds a 5-3 advantage in the series. Tip-off at Canale Arena is slated for 5 p.m.
