Women's Hoops Edged by Valdosta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team fell 58-54 to Valdosta State University in its return to A.E. Wood Coliseum since Dec. 17. The setback is the second straight in GSC play for the Lady Choctaws.

A trio of Lady Choctaws scored in double figures in the setback led by Zariah Matthews with 15 points. Zan Ratcliffe added 13 points as Coco Hobson supplied 12. Kirsten Thompson paced the Navy and Gold on the glass with 10 rebounds.
 
Kayla Bonilla led VSU with 17 points. Crystal Townsend and Nari Garner registered 14 and 13 respectively. Bonilla also led the Black and Red with eight rebounds.
 
TURNING POINT
With Mississippi College holding a 43-42 lead with just under eight minutes to play, Valdosta State knocked down two consecutive 3-pointers in minute span to take a 48-43 lead. The back-to-back treys led to a 9-2 run by the Red and Black and a six-point advantage in the game.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Matthews scored in double figures for the seventh time this season. That mark stands best on the team.
  • Ratcliffe posted double figures for the fourth time this season.
  • Hobson recorded her sixth time scoring double-digits.
  • Thompson's rebound total equals a season-high for the Starkville, Miss., native. It matches her mark at Southern Arkansas on Dec. 31.
  • The 47 rebounds for MC matches a season-high set against Christian Brothers on Dec. 17.
