Choctaws Defeat Rival Delta State in Double Overtime

CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team completed the second half comeback to defeat rival Delta State 3-2 in double overtime.

The Choctaws will improve to 4-2-0 on the year and 2-1 in GSC play.

The Statesmen will fall to 0-6-0 overall and 0-3 in GSC play.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Choctaws started out slow and Delta State took advantage. In the 29th minute the Statesmen took an early lead on a goal from Bruno Osorio making it 1-0 DSU.
- The 1-0 score would hold until the 77th minute when Delta State extended their lead thanks to a goal from Carlos Bestard with an assist on the play going to Bobby Wahl.
- The Choctaws came alive just a minute later when Tom Carles got MC on the board with an assist going to Conner Johnson making the score 2-1 still in favor of the Statesmen.
- In the 84th minute on a free kick opportunity Javier Avelar tied the match on his first goal of the year. The score would hold at 2-2 at the end of regulation.
- After a scoreless extra period, the Choctaws would finish the comeback in the second extra period on a cross from Owen Connelly that found Caleb Carpenter who headed it in the back of the net in the 107th to end the match and give MC the 3-2 victory.  
 

KEY STATS 
- The Choctaws outshot the Statesmen after starting slow. MC had 17 shots compared to DSU's 5.
- Delta State's keeper Matthew Klinck had an impressive afternoon with seven saves. The Statesmen were also credited with two team saves in the match.
- MC was called for offsides ten times in the match and the Statesmen were only called offsides three times. The rivalry showed in the form of physical play that resulted in 23 fouls being called in the match.  
- All three Choctaw goals were the first of the season and the first of their careers' for Carles, Avelar and Carpenter.
 
      
NEXT UP
- The Choctaws will travel to Searcy, Arkansas on Tuesday September 25 to face Harding University in a non-conference match that was rescheduled from earlier in the year.
