JACKSON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team won their second Gulf South Conference match in a row as they took down the Shorter University Hawks by a score of 7-2.
The Choctaws will improve to 5-2-0 overall and 3-1 in GSC play.
The Hawks will fall to 0-9-0 overall and 0-4 in GSC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shorter was able to strike early on a Choctaw defensive mistake, Thallison Alex was able to get free and score in the third minute of play giving the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
- MC was able to respond on a throw in opportunity,
Rafael Costa threw the ball into the box and it found the foot of
Javier Avelar who tied the match at 1-1 in the 13
th minute.
- The Choctaws were able to score three unanswered goals in the remaining 32 minutes of the first half to give them a 4-1 lead at the break. The goals came from
Andy Alanis in the 19
th minute,
Joshua Robinson in the 40
th minute and
Rafael Costa in the 42
nd minute.
- In the second half, the scoring didn't pick back up until
Connor Johnson was able to find the back of the net unassisted in the 71
st minute making the score 5-1.
- The Hawks were able to get one back in the 77
th minute when Alex was able to beat the Choctaw defense for a second time making the score 5-2.
- MC was able to add on to their lead and finish off the Hawks in the 82
nd and 85
th minute thanks to two goals from the foot of freshman
Tom Carles giving the match its final score of 7-2.

KEY STATS
- The seven goals in the match were the most the Choctaws have scored in one match this season besting their five goal performance against Ouachita Baptist.
- Captain
Rafael Costa was the top player maker on the day notching two assist to go along with his goal in the 42
nd minute.
- Towards the end of the match controversy ensued on an MC foul in the box that lead to a Shorter penalty-kick opportunity. Freshman goalkeeper
Goncalo Pernas was able to stop the attempt and slam the door shut on the Hawks.

- The Choctaws will be back in GSC play this Sunday, September 30 against Lee University. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time and is currently scheduled to take place at Robert P. Longabaugh but could be subject to change due to weather. Â Â Â
