Platt Ties Single-Match, Kill Record; MC Opens Season 2-0

MAGNOLIA, Ark.  – The Mississippi College volleyball team opened the Shawna Laurendine Era with a thrilling, 2-0 start to the 2018 campaign. Freshman Kendall Platt tied the program's single-match record with a team-best 20 kills to pace the Lady Choctaws to a 3-2 win over Cameron (Okla.) University. MC logged a five-set win over the University of Texas at Permian Basin to open the day.
 
Platt, a native of Anaheim, Calif., joins Clare Prichard with 20 kills in a match. Prichard set the benchmark on Oct. 5, 2007 at LeTournau University. Platt used the kill total to register her second, career double-double as she logged 15 digs against CU.

TURNING POINT
  • Tied 12-all in the decisive, fifth set, Platt and Autumn Frost registered a block to halt a 3-0, Cameron run and turn the momentum back in favor of the Navy and Gold to close out the match on its own 3-0 run. Frost and Jamie Boros closed out the match combining for the teams' seventh block.
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Boros and Shelby Grace Mays joined Platt in double figure kills with 11 and 10 respectively. Boros tied her season-high from the match against Texas-Permian Basin.
  • A quartet of Lady Choctaws recorded double-digit digs in the match led by Jill Brown with 16. Julia Martin and Rylee Markham recorded 10 digs apiece.
  • Mays, Boros and Frost each totaled three blocks in the outing.
  • Lexie Laurendine posted her second match with 20-plus assists. The Clinton, Miss., native added 23 in the match after posting 25 against UTPB.

TURNING POINT
  • After trailing 2-1, Mississippi College rallied to take the fourth set 25-20 and push the season opener to a fifth and deciding set. Tied 13-all in the final set, the Lady Choctaws gathered a kill from Shelby Grace Mays with the match-winning, kill coming from Lexie Laurendine.
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Mays recorded a career-high with 18 kills in the season opener. Mays' previous high was 15 against Arkansas-Monticello last season.
  • Kendall Platt registered a double-double in her collegiate debut with 13 kills and 12 digs.
  • Brandi Bundy registered a career-high 14 digs against UTPB. Her previous mark was 10 against North Alabama last season.
  • Hannah Rue finished the match with a career-high 10 kills as she surpassed her previous high of eight last set at Valdosta State last season. The Muscle Shoals, Ala., sophomore also tallied a career-high three digs.
  • Platt, Jamie Boros, Laurendine, Rylee Markham, and Grace Rich each made their collegiate debuts against UTPB.
  • Jill Brown registered 27 digs in the match – two off tying her career-high.
  • The decision gives head coach Shawna Laurendine her first at the helm of the Lady Choctaws.
