Choctaws Sweep Sunday Double-Header, Claim Series with Christian Brothers

CLINTON, Mississippi --- The Mississippi College baseball team took both games of a double-header with the Buccaneers of Christian Brother University on Sunday April 8 to claim the series two games to one. With the win, the Choctaw's record sits at 24-10 overall, and 13-7 in Gulf South Conference play.
 

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MC scored in each of their first four at-bats in game one. - The Choctaws put up a run in both the first and second innings, with those two runs coming from an RBI single from Blaine Crim in the 2,d, and an RBI base hit from Broussard in the second.
- The Choctaw's three-run third inning was highlighted by a two-run bunt single from Luke Yancey, which saw both Crim and Billy Cameron score as the result of a throwing error. Broussard's RBI single to center would account for the Choctaw's other run in the inning, giving them a 5-1 lead.
- MC saw their most productive inning in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Dylan Duplechain uncorked a frozen rope to right center that plated three runners. One batter later, Broussard connected for second homer of the season to left center, plating Duplechain and giving the Choctaws a 10-1 lead.
- The Choctaws would go on to finish off the Buccaneers in the seventh, when a Crim double to right field plated Hunter Wilson and gave the Choctaws a 11-1 advantage for the run-rule victory.
 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Choctaws outhit the Buccaneers 17-6 in game one.
- Crim logged a team-high four hits in the contest, while scoring twice and driving in two runs.
- Cameron, Duplechain and Broussard all collected three hits in the game, with Broussard driving in a game-high four runs.
- Cameron, Crim, Duplechain and Yancey all scored a team-best two runs in the game.  
- Jared Cramer picked up a team-high two hits in the game for the Buccaneers. Taylor Angley-Holman drove in the Buccaneers lone run.
- On the mound, Sophomore Zack Ingram (3-0) struck out four batters over seven innings of work to grab his team-best second complete-game victory of the season. Ingram allowed just 1 earned run, while walking just two.
- Gil Erwin (0-8) took the loss for Christian Brothers. Erwin allowed nine earned over four innings.
 
 
NOTEWORTHY
- The complete-game effort from Ingram marks for just the third CG from an MC pitcher this season.
- The Choctaws hit .478 (11-23) with runners on, .429 (6-14) with runners in scoring position, and .500 (6-12) with two outs.
- Six of the Choctaws 11 runs in game one came with two outs.
 
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MC was once again able to jump on Christian Brothers early, putting up six runs in the first four innings.
- Cameron started the scoring for MC in the first, with a two-run double to left field that plated Wilson and Kyle Smith.
- Crim would go on to plate Cameron in the first with a single through the right side one batter later, giving the Choctaws a 3-0 lead after one.
- The Choctaws struck for two more in the second, all coming on a Smith Single up the middle that plated Broussard and Ty Alderman.
- The Choctaws would grab an unearned run in the fourth, and pick up a pair in the fifth on a two-RBI knock from Broussard to take their largest lead of the game at 8-0.
- The Buccaneers would scratch three runs in the seventh, but it would not be enough as 5-3 double play initiated by Cameron put an end to the game.
 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Cameron cranked out a team-high four hits in the Choctaws 12-hit performance. Cameron also drove in a pair.
- Smith and Broussard both also accounted for two runs driven in during game two, with Smith collecting two base hits.
- Wilson also recorded two hits in the game, in addition to scoring two runs.
- Jared Cramer and Jaime Soto both knocked a team-high two base hits for the Bucs. Nick Traylor, Keagan Voss, and TJ Klutts all batted in a run for Christian Brothers.
- On the mound, Hunter Mullis (5-3) fanned seven hitters over six innings of work. The senior southpaw allowed just three earned and issued no free passes en route to his team-best fifth win of the season.
- Tommy Taborda worked the final inning for the Choctaws out of the bullpen, needing just nine pitches to record three outs.
 - Will Rutledge (0-6) took the loss for the Bucs. Rutledge four earned over 1.2 innings.
 

NOTEWORTHY
- As a team, the Choctaws hit .400 (12-30) in game two, highlighted by a mark of .500 (4-8) with runners in scoring position, and an average of .421 (8-19) with runners on base.
- Choctaw leadoff hitters hit for .667 (4-6) in game two.
- The Choctaw pitching staff handed out no free passes in the game.
 

UP NEXT
- The Choctaws will return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they face off against Alabama-Huntsville in a Gulf South Conference double-header. First pitch from Huntsville, Ala. is slated for 2:00 p.m.
