Baseball Preview: Christian Brothers

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team will welcome the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University to Dickins-Scoper Stadium this weekend for a three-game Gulf South Conference series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. and wrapping up with a single game on Sunday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m.

STORY LINES AND NOTES
Mississippi College (22-9, 11-6 GSC) hosts Christian Brothers (9-25, 3-15 GSC) in their fourth GSC series since making the transition back to Division II.
 
The Choctaws currently sit in 6th place in the GSC standings, while only being a half game out of third place and three games out of first place with four weeks of regular season action left.
 
The Choctaws hold a 9-6 advantage over Christian Brothers in the series, highlighted by a two games to one series win over the Buccaneers in their most recent three-game series last season in Memphis.
 
In their most recent work, the Choctaws dropped a 12-11 midweek contest at Montevallo on April 4.
 
The Choctaws are hitting .318 as a team heading into the weekend. Junior first baseman Blaine Crim leads MC in a plethora of offensive categories, including batting average (.382), hits (47), home runs (6), runs batted in (36), and slugging percentage (.618). Junior outfielder Kyle Smith leads the Choctaws and sits tied for 3rd in the GSC with 11 doubles, in addition to ranking in the top five in the GSC in runs scored (38) and on-base percentage (.490).
 
On the mound, Chris Crosby (4-2) has posted a team-best 47 strikeouts in a team-high 51.1 innings pitched. The Saucier, Miss. native also paces the Choctaws with four wins on the season.
 
Relievers Ryan Lane an Austin Chastang have combined for six of the Choctaws 10 saves on the season. Chastang's opponents' batting average of .200 marks for the team low.
 
The Choctaws checked in at number nine in the most recent South Regional Rankings compiled by the NCBWA on April 2. 
 
The Buccaneers are coming off of a 12-6 setback to Rhodes College on Wednesday, April 4.
 
Jaime Soto's .331 batting average paces the Buccaneers, who are hitting .237 as a unit. Soto also paces the Bucs in total hits (39), doubles (7), RBIs (22) and runs scored (20).
 
Peyton Sanderlin leads the Buccaneer pitching staff, with a team-low 4.14 earned run average in a team-high 63 innings pitched, in addition to tallying a team-best 56 strikeouts.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and started competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
