CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Mississippi College baseball team fell 2-0 on Sunday, Apr. 29 to nationally-ranked and in-state foe Delta State at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. The Choctaws move to 29-15 on the season and 18-10 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State improves to 38-8 and 23-5 in league play.
MC outhit the Statesmen in the contest 10-7, but couldn't come up with the timely hit to push runs across the scoreboard. The two teams combined for 24 runners left on base with the Choctaws leaving 11 stranded.
The Navy and Gold got multiple hit performances from
Billy Cameron,
Hunter Wilson and
Trey Pittman in the game as the trio gathered two hits each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two squads battled through three scoreless innings before Delta State dented the board as Jeremy Burney scored on a MC throwing error in the bottom of the fourth.
- MC loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out, but the Green and White managed to escape unscathed in the inning leaving the bags full.
- The Statesmen added their second run in the seventh inning as Brian Lane singled to score Jason Popovich, who walked to lead off the frame.
- The Choctaws attempted a rally in the eighth as Cameron and Wilson each singled in the frame, but back-to-back ground outs ended the rally.
ON THE MOUND
- Chris Crosby (5-4) took the loss on the mound for MC as he tossed seven frames and allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits. The junior surrendered eight walks along with compiling six strikeouts.
- Austin Chastang tossed one frame with two hits allowed with two strikeouts in the relief appearance.
- Dalton Minton (8-1) received the win on the hill with seven innings in the start. Minton fanned eight and allowed seven hits. Hunter Riggins (5) took the save with two innings of relief work with three hits allowed and a strikeout.
NOTABLES
- Mississippi College left at least a runner on base in seven innings, including multiple runners in the second, sixth and eighth.
- Delta State left runners on the bags in six of its eight frames.
UP NEXT
Mississippi College travels back to Cleveland, Miss., for the Gulf South Conference Championship. The Choctaws will be one of the four teams in Pool A along with top seed Delta State, No. 5 seed North Alabama and No 8 seed West Alabama. MC opens pool play on Saturday, May 5 against North Alabama. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. The Choctaws make their second straight appearance in the GSC Championship.
