Choctaws Split with Nationally-Ranked Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss.  – The Mississippi College baseball team claimed a 6-3 win in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader to split the series with nationally-ranked and in-state foe Delta State University on Apr. 28 at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. DSU rallied in 11 innings to take the opening game of the series 8-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
  • Mississippi College held a 3-0 lead through seven-plus innings as Brandon Broussard started the scoring with a RBI double in the fifth inning. Blaine Crim extended the lead in the sixth with a RBI double of his own followed by a Hunter Wilson sacrifice fly to capture the first three runs of the game.
  • Zack Shannon placed the Statesmen on the board in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run home run and Nick Morgan tied the game with a sac fly that scored Clay Casey.
  • After scoreless frames in the ninth and 10th, the Choctaws regained the lead in the 11th as Wilson scored on a Statesmen error on a sac bunt. MC posted the run without collecting a hit in the inning.
  • Delta State rallied in the bottom of the 11th. The Green and White tied the contest on a bases loaded walk and Brian Lane followed with a walk-off grand slam to give DSU the 8-4, series-opening victory.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Stephen Atkins (1-1) took the loss on the mound. Atkins tossed 1.1 innings in relief as he allowed two runs – both earned – on one hit and two hit batters.
  • MC sent six hurlers to the mound in the game. Starter Zack Ingram pitched 7.1 frames as he allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
  • Jason Lott (2-1) claimed the win on the hill with two innings of work in relief as he allowed one run with a walk and two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
  • The Choctaws struck first in game two as the Navy and Gold plated a run in its first trip to the plate as Luke Yancey lofted a sacrifice fly into center field to score Kyle Smith.
  • DSU answered in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs headlined by Jason Popovich's solo home run.
  • The Statesmen extended their lead in the second when Emil Ellis singled down the left field line to plate Justin Nussbaum.
  • MC regained the lead in the fifth inning as Crim hit a three-run home run to place the Choctaws up a run. The home run marked his 10th home run of the season and 21st of his career.
  • The Navy and Gold added a run in the sixth on a fielder's choice and Brandon Broussard delivered the final run of the game in the seventh with a single that plated Hunter Wilson.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Tim Holloway (1-0) claimed the win on the hill going one inning with one hit allowed. Shelby Craddock (2) received the save as he tossed the final two frames of the contest with a hit and a walk.
  • MC starter Hunter Mullis pitched four frames with three runs allowed on five hits and a pair of walks.
  • Seth Hougesen (2-1) took his first loss of the season as he pitched 4.1 innings in the start and allowed four runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
NOTABLES
  • Crim became the first Choctaw since the 2011 season to record double-digit home runs in a season. The Mobile, Ala., native recorded the only multiple hit effort for MC in the twinbill going 2-for-5 in the opener with a RBI and run scored.
