Lady Choctaws Fall in Finale, Take Series at #4 North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. --- Despite an 8-2 loss on Saturday, the Mississippi College softball team picked up a road series win over #4 North Alabama at the UNA Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws had a five-game win streak snapped, moving to 16-11 and 9-8 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Lions moved to 24-4 and 15-2 in the league. MC clinched the series with a doubleheader sweep of UNA on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions cracked the scoreboard in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Hannah Shollenberger to take a 1-0 lead.
- They would break things open in the third inning with four runs, three of which were unearned.
- The big blow of the frame was a two-out, two-run home run by Harley Stokes.
- MC would score their first run of the game in the fifth inning as sophomore Shayla McKissock singled home junior Makenzie Nieto with two outs to make the score 5-1.
- UNA would get the run right back in their half of the fifth as Stokes homered for the second time in the game and third time in the series.
- The Lions would add two more runs in the sixth on solo home runs, pushing the lead out to a 8-1.
- Nieto would hit her fourth home run of the season to lead off the seventh, but the Lady Choctaws would fall in the series finale.

KEY STATS
- Junior Brianna Caldwell and Nieto each had two hits for the Lady Choctaws with Caldwell doubling and Nieto homering for MC's extra-base hits in the contest.
- Nieto would score both runs as she joined McKissock with the Lady Choctaws' RBI's.
- Junior Penny Nichols (3-5) took the loss for MC, giving up six hits and three earned runs over 3.1 innings.
- Stokes led the Lions with three hits and three RBI from her two home runs, while Bailey Nelson added two hits.
- Megan Garst (11-2) scattered seven hits over the complete game effort in the circle for the Lions.

NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws will be back in action next Friday when they host Union for a three-game series.
