Baseball Preview: William Carey

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team will travel to Biloxi, Miss. on Wednesday, March 14 to take on NAIA-opponent William Carey University at MGM Park at 1:00 p.m.

STORY LINES AND NOTES
- Mississippi College and William Carey square off for the 20th time in series history on Wednesday, with William Carey leading the overall series 13-6.  The Choctaws have - bested the Crusaders in their last three meeting from 2016-17, including a 20-10 win last season in Clinton on March 28, 2017 in their most recent meeting.
 
- In their most recent action, the Choctaws took two of three games from Lee University in a GSC weekend series on March 9 and March 10, improving to 15-3 overall and 7-2 in GSC play. Both of MC's wins over the flames came in walk-off fashion, with a walk-off home run from Blaine Crim in game three to claim the weekend series.
 
- The Choctaws are hitting a GSC-best .339 as a team, highlighted by eight players hitting above .300 on the year. Billy Cameron paces both the Choctaws and the GSC with a .464 batting average. The junior third baseman also sits third in the conference in slugging percentage (.768) , and fifth in on base-percentage (.508).
 
- Chris Crosby has posted a 2.08 ERA in four starts this season. Crosby leads the team with four wins this season. The Saucier, Miss., native leads the team with 32 strikeouts and has tossed a team-best 34.2 innings on the bump.
 
- Relievers Brandon Kennedy and Christian Bellew lead the Choctaw squad with seven appearances on the season. Four Choctaw pitchers have recorded a save on the season, with Tommy Taborda's three serving as the team-high.
 
- The Choctaws currently hold down the number 24 spot in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association D-II National Poll, while being ranked number six in the South Regional Rankings compiled by the NCBWA.
 
- The Crusaders head into the midweek matchup winners of three of their last four, with a SSAC series win over Middle Georgia State College last weekend in their most recent work.
 
- Christian Smith's .329 batting average leads a William Carey team hitting .254 on the year, while also pacing the team with 21 runs scored. Marcus Buckley sports the team's second-best batting average at .317, with a team-high 26 base hits on the season.
 
- The Crusader pitching staff features four players with ERA's under three. Dylan Spiers 1.29 ERA and five wins leads a Crusder staff sporting a 3.94 earned run average.
 
 
Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and began competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
