Baseball Preview: Missouri S&T

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team returns to the diamond this weekend as it hosts Missouri S&T in a four-game series. Action begins on Friday, Feb. 9 with a doubleheader at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Miss. The series concludes on Saturday, Feb. 10 with a second twinbill. First pitch is slated for Noon each day.

THE SERIES
Mississippi College and Missouri S&T have never met on the baseball diamond.

NOTES
• Mississippi College claimed the season-opening series over No. 17 Lindenwood with a 7-1 victory on Monday afternoon. The series win is the fi rst over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2014 over Concordia-Texas.
Hunter Wilson went 4-for-5 at the plate on Monday to lead the Choctaws offensively. The four-hit performance is the most by a Choctaw this season and the most since Blaine Crim went 5-for-5 with fi ve RBI and two runs scored in the opening game of the series with No. 3 Delta State last season. Wilson finished the series hitting .500 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Kyle Smith led MC at the dish over the weekend going 7-for-12 with seven RBI and five runs scored. The Petal, Miss., native logged five doubles in the series which leads the GSC.
• Six Choctaws made their debuts in the series. Ty Alderman and Luke Yancey each posted clips of .300 or better at the plate to finish in the top five among hitters for the weekend. Brandon Kennedy and Chris Crosby made impacts on the mound. Crosby picked up the series clinching win going 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and 1.42 ERA. Kennedy made two appearances on the weekend with three strikeouts in four innings of relief work.
• Missouri S&T opens the 2018 season this weekend with its trip to the Magnolia State. The Miners were tabbed third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West in the preseason poll. S&T finished last season third in the West Division with a record of 16-12 in the league and earned a berth to the GLVC Tournament.
• Matt Knickerbocker returns as the leading hitter for the Miners. Knickerbocker was an All-GLVC West Division Second Team selection for the Green and Gold last season as he hit .314 on the season with 18 RBI and finished fourth on the team with 43 hits.
