Men's Basketball Preview: Montevallo, West Alabama

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will hit the road for a pair of Gulf South Conference contests when they face Montevallo and West Alabama.

The Choctaws will face Montevallo on Thursday (Feb. 8) night at 8:00 p.m. before traveling to Livingston to face UWA on Saturday (Feb. 10) at 4:00 p.m.
 

THE SERIES

This will be just the 4th all-time meeting between MC and Montevallo with the Falcons holding a 2-1 edge in the series. UM came to Clinton on January 15th and pulled out a 64-60 victory over the homestanding Choctaws. MC erased a late seven-point deficit, but the Falcons hit four free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory. Donovan Ham led the Choctaws with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The Choctaws and Tigers have met 66 previous times with the Choctaws holding a 34-32 edge in the series, but UWA has a 4-3 lead since MC re-joined the league in 2014-15. On December 9th, UWA came to Clinton and blew open a tight game at the half to walk away with an 86-60 victory. The Choctaws shot a season-low 30.9% from the floor.
 

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE (9-11, 6-9 GSC)

MC is coming off a 97-79 loss to West Georgia on Saturday where the Wolves scored 27 points of 20 turnovers to hold off a late charge by the Choctaws. Sophomore Brandon Boston (14.8 ppg) scored a team-best 24 points, while Johnson had a career-high 10 rebounds.

Boston has scored at least 20 points in each of the last five contests, averaging 24.8 per game over that stretch. He has made 11 field goals in four of those games. Senior Otis Harvey (6.4 ppg) has started 18-of-20 games this season and went 3-of-6 from long range against West Georgia.
 

MONTEVALLO (13-11, 8-7 GSC)

The Falcons had won five straight games before falling in their last two contests to West Alabama (82-77 OT) and North Alabama (73-72). They are currently tied for 5th in the GSC standings but sit just two games ahead of the Choctaws going into the final five games of the season.

Jamaar Taylor (23.9 ppg) is the team's leading scorer this season but has missed 10 games, including each of the last three. Chris Williams (16.1 ppg) is shooting 83% from the free throw line and has a team-best 93 assists on the year.

Jeremiah Curtis (10.0 ppg) is also scoring in double-figures with 5.0 rebounds per game. Guity (7.5 ppg) leads the team with 8.6 rebounds per game and 34 total blocked shots.
 

WEST ALABAMA (17-6, 11-4 GSC)

The Tigers, led by 4th-year head coach Allen Sharpe, will look to clinch a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament with a win as they sit in 3rd in the GSC standings. UWA has won three straight games, all of which came on the road against Auburn Montgomery, Montevallo and UAH. They are 9-1 in Livingston this season.

Charles Eaton (27.3 ppg) leads the GSC in scoring and is shooting 51% from the field and 74% from the free throw line. He has scored at least 15 points in every game this season, including 34 in the win over MC on December 9th. Josh Fleming (16.0 ppg) and Gavin Robinson (11.3 ppg) are also in scoring in double-figures with Robinson leading the team in rebounding (8.0 rpg). Domonique Alexander (5.7 ppg) has a league-best 59 blocked shots on the year.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
