MAGNOLIA, Ark. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team closed out 2018 in dramatic fashion with an 81-79, overtime victory on the road at Southern Arkansas University. Three Lady Choctaws scored in double figures while freshman Kirsten Thompson notched her first, double-digit rebounding effort of her career.
 
Zan Ratcliffe led MC in scoring with 19 points while Coco Hobson poured in 18 points. Jamilah Sanders rounded out the trio with 16 points. Thompson led the team with 10 rebounds to go along with her seven points.
 
Brette Wacha led the Lady Muleriders with 17 points while Ariana Guinn added 16. Lena Maledon supplied 11 points. Alyssa Crase finished with point shy of a double-double with nine points and a team-leading 11 rebounds.

TURNING POINT
Tied at 72-all in the extra period, Ratcliffe knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:44 left in the game to place MC up 75-72. The Lady Choctaws never trailed the remainder of the way. The trey was one of six by the Navy and Gold in the game. SAU had two final go awry in the final 14 seconds to extend the game to a second, extra session.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • The scoring output for Ratcliffe and Sanders marked career-highs for the duo. Hobson reset her season-high scoring total in the contest. Ratcliffe's previous high was 14 in the season opener at Miles. Sanders and Hobson's previous bests were set against Christian Brothers prior to the Christmas break.
  • Thompson's rebounds garnered her a season-high for the Starkville, Miss., native. Her previous high was seven, twice this season with the last coming against Montevallo.
  • Zariah Matthews equaled her career-high in assists with a team-best six. The mark matches her output at Auburn Montgomery on Dec. 17, 2018.
  • Mississippi College shot 42.9 percent from behind the arc, the second-highest percentage this season (44.4 at Miles – Nov. 9).
  • The six, 3-pointers ties the most this season for the Lady Choctaws and equals the number hit at West Alabama (Dec. 1).
  • Shooting 51.9 percent from the field marks the second-best, shooting percentage this season (53.2 at Miles).
  • MC shot 88.9 percent from the floor in the third quarter en route to outscoring SAU 23-13 in the period.
  • With 30 rebounds, it marks the fourth time this season MC has been held to less than 40 boards. SAU outrebounded the Lady Choctaws by two marking the fourth time MC has been out-rebounded this season.

 
NEXT
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 5 as it returns to Gulf South Conference action at the University of West Georgia. MC looks to snap a three-game slide against the Wolves and earn its first victory in Carrollton, Ga., in program history. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. central.
