Women's Hoops Topped at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team suffered its second loss in Gulf South Conference play as the Lady Choctaws fell 80-69 at the University of West Alabama on Saturday, Dec. 1
 
Lauran Sheriff led the Lady Choctaws in scoring with 15 points. Jamilah Sanders added nine points along with a team-best seven rebounds. Kirsten Thompson added six boards and eight points along with Coco Hobson.
 
West Alabama had four players score in double figures led by Bria Dent with 18 points. J'Nyiah Daniels and Tazsa Garrett-Hammett each added 15 points while Latangellia Walker poured in 14 points. Garett-Hammett also added 10 rebounds.
 
MC shot 40.3 percent from the field while UWA connected on 46.7 percent, including 40 percent from behind the arc. The two teams each grabbed 43 rebounds in the contest.

TURNING POINT
West Alabama went on a 14-2 run midway through the third quarter after Sheriff placed the Lady Choctaws up 42-40 on a jumper with 6:55 left in the quarter. Garrett-Hammett tied the contest at 42-all with a free throw at the 5:48 mark of the period. Three different Lady Tigers hit 3-pointers during the run.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Sheriff has scored in double figures in the last two contests for the Lady Choctaws. The Jackson, Miss., native totaled a career-high 20 points in the setback to Montevallo to open conference play.
  • Mississippi College hit a season-high six 3-pointers in the contest. The total surpasses its previous high of five set against LeMoyne-Owen on Nov. 17.
  • The Lady Choctaws grabbed 40-plus rebounds for the fourth time this season.
  • The Lady Tigers hit five of their first 10 shots in the game en route to grabbing a double-digit lead late in the opening period. MC connected on two of its first 10.
