Lady Choctaws Hold Off Arkansas-Monticello

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team outlasted the University of Arkansas at Monticello, 58-57, in pre-Thanksgiving, non-conference action. MC remains unblemished inside A.E. Wood Coliseum.
 
Zariah Matthews was the lone double-digit scorer for the Lady Choctaws with a season-high 15 points. The scoring output surpassed her previous best of 14 set at Miles College in the season opener. Zan Ratcliffe added nine points with eight coming from Lindsey Vaughn off the bench. Emery Wilson paced the Navy and Gold on the glass with eight rebounds – a season-high, which reset her best of five at Miles.

TURNING POINT
Matthews knocked down a pair of free-throws with 22 seconds left in the game to place the Lady Choctaws up 57-54. The Bogue Chitto, Miss., native went 6-for-6 in the final quarter from the free-throw line and finished the night 7-of-8 from the stripe. Freshman Kirstein Thompson added the front-end of a pair of free throws to put MC up four points with seven seconds left.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Matthews has scored in double figures in all four contests this season – the only Lady Choctaw to accomplish the feat.
  • For the fourth time this season, Mississippi College out-rebounded its opponent. MC grabbed 40-plus boards for the third straight game as it totaled 45.
  • Thompson registered a season-high in rebounds as she surpassed her previous-high of five last set against LeMoyne-Owen.
  • The win breaks the deadlock in the series between the two squads and gives MC a 3-2 advantage.
  • UAM outscored the Lady Choctaws 27-19 in the fourth quarter. The Cotton Blossoms totaled 20 points in the first three quarters.
