Choctaws Edged in Five Sets

CLINTON, Miss.  – For the fifth time this season, the Mississippi College volleyball team forced a contest to the deciding set, but the Choctaws came up on the short end of the decision as they fell to the University of West Alabama in Gulf South Conference action.
 
Tuesday's affair marks the third time in five outings MC has extended the match to the fifth set. The Navy and Gold is 2-3 in five-set matches this season.
 
Trailing 2-1 in the match, Mississippi College rallied back in the fourth set to claim a 25-18 decision and send the match to the deciding set. West Alabama tallied set wins in the first (25-18) and third (25-11) before claiming the final set 15-8. The Choctaws claimed the second set 25-21.

TURNING POINT
After Mississippi College cut the deficit to 9-8, West Alabama closed out the deciding set with the final six points to clinch the five-set win. The Tigers logged kills from five different players down the stretch.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Freshman Lexie Laurendine notched season-highs with 29 assists and nine kills in the match. The assist total surpasses her previous best of 25 set against the University of Texas-Permian Basin. Her kill total eclipsed her previous-high of seven last accomplished over the weekend at Valdosta State. The Clinton, Miss., native also added 12 digs for her second double-double of the season. The 12 digs tied a season-high.
  • Freshman Kendall Platt posted her 15th match in double figures with a team-best 13 kills.
  • Freshman Jamie Boros added 11 kills for her 11th contest in double-digits.
  • Junior Shelby Grace Mays chipped away at her pursuit of 500 career kills. The Arab, Ala., native is now 16 from reaching the milestone.
  • Senior Jill Brown recorded her ninth contest with 20-plus digs.
