VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped a 76-53 Gulf South Conference contest on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Valdosta State University. MC moved to 5-10 on the season and 1-8 in the conference. The Lady Blazers improved to 11-4 and 5-2 in the league.

Madi Mitchell hit a 3-pointer with 4:13 in the first quarter to place VSU up 12-3. The trey was one of two hit to help the Lady Blazers grab a double-digit lead.

Lauren Sheriff was the only Lady Choctaw to score in double figures as she led with 12 points.

Mitchell led VSU with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Crystal Townsend added 10 points for the Lady Blazers.

Valdosta State shot 44.8 percent from the field, including a clip of 34.8 from behind the arc. The Navy and Gold connected on 35.0 percent.

The Lady Blazers outscored MC 23-13 in second chance points and held the advantage in points in the paint at 30-16.

Lacey placed Mississippi College on the board with a 3-pointer at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter, giving MC its first lead at 3-2. Valdosta State responded with a 12-0 run to grab its first double-digit lead at 14-3 with three minutes left in the opening period. The Lady Blazers held a 19-6 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes of play. Valdosta State widened its deficit to a 14-point lead at the half, 35-21, despite the Lady Choctaws playing the home squad within a point at 16-15 in the second quarter.

After VSU expanded its margin as it outscored MC 23-11 in the third quarter, the Lady Choctaws outscored the Red and Black 21-18 in the final period led by a 6-1 scoring run to start the quarter. MC scored the final nine points of the contest led by seven points coming from Sheriff.

Noteworthy
Sheriff has registered five straight games with a block, including four contests with at least two rejections. The freshman has 10 games this season with a block.

The Lady Choctaws had 10 of the 11 Lady Choctaws to take the floor recorded points in the contest. 10 also gathered at least one rebound in the game.

For the fifth, consecutive contest Mississippi College was outrebounded.

The loss is the first for the Lady Choctaws in three outings at Valdosta State. MC had claimed its last two meetings on the Lady Blazers' home floor.
