Choctaws Down Chargers, 105-93, Pick Up Fourth Straight Win

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team had five players score in double-figures, led by 25 from junior Donovan Ham, in a 105-93 victory over Alabama Huntsville on Thursday night in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Choctaws improved to 7-5 with a 4-3 mark in the Gulf South Conference, while the Chargers fell to 9-5 and 2-4 in league play.
 

TURNING POINT
- Following a three-pointer from Justin Ward of UAH with 7:31 remaining, the back-and-forth contest was tied at 80-80. MC would go on a 10-2 run, including a big three-pointer by freshman Dyllan Taylor and would not have their lead cut to less than seven the rest of the way.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half was an offensive onslaught from both teams as the Choctaws shot 64% (21-of-33) from the field and the Chargers 59% (20-of-34) as UAH would take a 54-52 lead into halftime.
- Following a free throw by Kip Owens with 13:29 remaining, the game was tied at 20-20, but the Choctaws would go on a 12-0 run that included seven points by junior Isaiah Austin.
- After the Choctaws staked claim to their largest lead of the night at 32-20, UAH would chip away and a personal 8-0 run by Chayse Elliott would give them the two-point lead at the break.
- The second have got a little sloppy with 33 total fouls called and 41 total free throws shot, but MC would erase a five-point deficit and go on a 13-2 run to take a 73-67 lead with 10:56 remaining on a three-pointer by Ham.
- The Chargers would again come all the way back and Ward's three-pointer with less than eight minutes left tied the game at 80-80.
- Following the 10-2 run by MC, they would not lead by less than seven points the rest of the way as they picked up their fourth straight victory.
 

KEY STATS
- The Choctaws finished the night shooting 55% (36-65) from the field and went 24-of-34 (71%) from the free throw line.
- The Chargers would shoot 52% (31-60) and going 19-of-22 (86%) from the foul line.
- MC would outrebound UAH 41-21, including pulling down 13 offensive rebounds, while giving up just two boards on the offensive glass.
- The Choctaws had a season-high 27 assists, led by senior Antonio Johnson with eight helpers.
- Ham led five different Choctaws in double-figures as senior Stacey Mack (19), Austin (18), Johnson (16) and sophomore Brandon Boston (13) joined him.
- Johnson also tied a career-high with eight rebounds, tying Ham for the team-lead on the night.
- The Chargers were led by Owens with a career-high 29, going 11-of-18 from the floor.
- Elliott (15), Ward (15) and Malik Cook-Stroupe (13) also scored in double-figures on the night.
 

GAME NOTES
- The Choctaws are now 7-5 all-time against UAH, snapping a five-game losing streak that dated back to January of 2015.
- It was the first win for MC over the Chargers since a 71-60 victory on December 16, 1996.
- This was the second-highest scoring game for the Choctaws after putting up 107 in a win over Southern-New Orleans on November 20th.
- The win gave MC their first four-game winning streak since the 2014-15 campaign.
- This was also the 2,300th game in school history as the Choctaws are now 1256-944 in their storied history.
 

NEXT UP
- The Choctaws will hit the road for a pair of tough tests as they face GSC-leading West Florida (January 7) and Valdosta State (January 9).
